Good day freewriters! This is my music themed entry for the freewrite prompt "cancer". This 5-Minute Freewrite Challenge was initiated by @mariannewest. Everyone are welcome to participate in this challenge by checking her profile for the daily prompt, and @freewritehouse.

Back in early 2000s, rock music has been becoming popular through the likes of Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Evanescence, Korn, and others. There also came Nickelback, Creed, and Puddle of Mud achieving mainstream success. Even solo female artists, who may be toned down, with pop rock and punk tunes are popular too. Thanks to Avril Lavigne who had changed the landscape of female singers from Britney's influence then.

Avril Lavigne is from Canada, where many artists and bands achieved success too. One of the 2000s band I know of from that country is Simple Plan. The band was known for their songs about heartbreak and anger, family issues, while they also spread some good messages too. So here are the picks from the band:

Perfect

This song might've been considered Simple Plan's signature hit. Talking about not being perfect aimed towards the father as stated in the lyrics, it is a message of telling your parents how you feel. Some may have been negative thinking it encourages rebellion, but I think it is a way to open communication between parents and their kids. "Perfect" was a number 24 hit on Billboard Hot 100. I remember this song was extremely popular here in the Philippines as it was played on radio a lot of times in a day.

Untitled

I feel like this song is about being in despair, but there are claims it is also about drunk driving. The music video also sends a message about it, as well as about family. The single managed to peak at number 49 in Billboard Hot 100, and this kind of songs from them like "Perfect" are big hits in our country.

Save You

I first heard about this song when it was played on MTV. While watching it, I am in tears as it is about "cancer", and the song may be speaking about wanting to save a loved one from the disease. It touched me because at that time, it's less than a year when my mom suffered and died from cancer. The single was considered a hit in their home country.
