🐧Captive Gentoo Penguins [Pingüinos Papúa de Penguin cautivos]

Hello. Dear nature and ecotourism lovers!

Ayer compartí mi apasionada experiencia en el safari de Nambiti Private Game Reserve, ubicada en Sudáfrica; un maravilloso lugar donde la naturaleza salvaje muestra su equilibrio ecológico, la flora y fauna manifiestan su esplendor con libertad y dinamismo; ahora bien, en este post presento algunas imágenes de mi visita a un acuario en Ciudad del Cabo, donde hay una pequeña y cautiva colonia de Pingüinos Papúa de Penguin. De antemano te digo que mi postura es crítica ante el cautiverio de estos nobles animales.

Gisteren deelde ik mijn gepassioneerde ervaring op de safari van Nambiti Privé-reservaat, gelegen in Zuid-Afrika; een prachtige plek waar de wilde natuur haar ecologisch evenwicht toont, de flora en fauna hun pracht en praal met vrijheid en dynamiek manifesteren; now, in this post I present some images of my visit to an aquarium in Cape Town, where there is a small and captive colony of Penguin Gentoo Penguins. I tell you beforehand that my position is critical to the captivity of these noble animals.

Estos miembros de la colonia son descendientes genéticos de los primitivos pingüinos que aparecieron hace 36 millones de años en las heladas montañas de Perú. Como pueden observar, se encuentran en cautiverio confinados en un ecosistema artificial cuya infraestructura tecnológica intenta simular su hábitat natural.

These members of the colony are genetic descendants of the primitive penguins that appeared 36 million years ago in the frozen mountains of Peru. As you can see, they are in captivity confined in an artificial ecosystem whose technological infrastructure tries to simulate their natural habitat.

Los pingüinos son hermosas criaturas que evolucionaron y se adaptaron a los cambios ambientales y climáticos como un particular tipo de ave. Su elegante vestido y cobertura natural de color negro y blanco los hacen más interesantes de conocer, sobre todo su anatomía y cambio de alas por aletas; adaptación que se debió a su instinto natural de supervivencia y mayor habilidad para conseguir su alimento.

Penguins are beautiful creatures that evolved and adapted to environmental and climatic changes as a particular type of bird. Their elegant dress and natural black and white coverings make them more interesting to know, especially their anatomy and change of wings for fins; adaptation that was due to their natural instinct of survival and greater ability to get their food.

Del punto anterior enlazamos el siguiente, en un ecosistema natural y salvaje característico de estas aves marinas, ellos responden a su comportamiento de cazar su alimento, mientras en cautiverio son obligados a convertirse en sedentarios tras la domesticación dietética.

From the previous point we link the following, in a natural and wild ecosystem characteristic of these sea birds, they respond to their behavior of hunting their food, while in captivity they are forced to become sedentary after dietary domestication.

Por más que se quiso controlar los factores ambientales, no se pudo. La poca luz artificial y natural no compensa la radiación solar que poseen sus hábitats naturales. Esto influye negativamente en el comportamiento y ciertas reacciones fisiológicas del ave.

As much as they wanted to control environmental factors, they couldn't. The little artificial and natural light does not compensate the solar radiation that their natural habitats have. This has a negative influence on the behaviour and certain physiological reactions of the bird.

Estos animales perdieron su habilidad al vuelo y redujeron su velocidad de desplazamiento en tierra, pero desarrollaron una extraordinaria destreza para nadar y bucear por necesidades como ave marina capaz de resistir la respiración hasta por 18 minutos y mantener un ritmo de velocidad acuática de hasta 12 kilómetros por hora.

These animals lost their ability to fly and reduced their speed on land, but developed an extraordinary ability to swim and dive for needs as a sea bird capable of resisting breathing for up to 18 minutes and maintaining a water speed of up to 12 kilometers per hour.

Es evidente que en un hábitat como este se deprime y atrofian sus condiciones naturales.

It is evident that in a habitat like this one, they become depressed and their natural conditions atrophy.

Estas criaturas poseen varias capaz resistentes de grasa debajo de su plumada y gruesa piel; sin embargo, algunos estudios científicos han demostrado la vulnerabilidad de su organismo ante ciertos parásitos y bacterias. Considerando el borde limoso del estanque, excremento dentro y fuera del agua, ausencia de luz solar para desinfectar de manera natural el entorno; es preocupante inferir conclusiones bacteriológicas y sanitarias.

These creatures possess several resistant fat capacities under their feathery and thick skin; however, some scientific studies have shown the vulnerability of their organism to certain parasites and bacteria. Considering the slimy edge of the pond, excrement in and out of the water, lack of sunlight to naturally disinfect the environment; it is worrying to draw bacteriological and sanitary conclusions.

Un fenómeno social en los pingüinos en cautiverio es que tienen una moderada posibilidad de prácticas copulativas entre ejemplares del mismo sexo, situación que no sucede en su hábitat natural.

A social phenomenon in captive penguins is that they have a moderate possibility of copulative practices among specimens of the same sex, a situation that does not occur in their natural habitat.

Una de las ventajas que tiene esta especie en cautiverio es alargar su ciclo de vida; por lo general un pingüino vive 20 años en su hábitat natural, mientras en ambientes controlados puede vivir una o dos décadas más; pero, con la calidad de vida y salud que evidencia esta colonia de pingüinos no sé que es mejor...

One of the advantages that this species has in captivity is to lengthen its life cycle; generally a penguin lives 20 years in its natural habitat, while in controlled environments it can live one or two more decades; but, with the quality of life and health that this penguin colony evidences, I don't know what is better...

La vida salvaje y particularmente de ciertas especies animales como esta maravilla de la naturaleza marina, son motivo de alegría, entusiasmo y gozo cuando las presenciamos; por eso asistimos a circos, zoológicos y sitios como este, el cual es muy bonito. Esta cámara de reclusión avícola me desanimó y sentí tristeza por el penoso cautiverio que purgan estos indefensos animales.

Wildlife and particularly certain animal species such as this marvel of marine nature, are a source of joy, enthusiasm and enjoyment when we witness them; that is why we attend circuses, zoos and places like this, which is very beautiful. This poultry confinement chamber discouraged me and I felt sadness for the painful captivity that these defenseless animals are purging.

Pero tú no te entristezcas, son muchas las acciones de consciencia ecológica que están siendo elevadas a través de diversas organizaciones no gubernamentales, organismos públicos e iniciativas comunicativas por pequeña que parezcan, este post puede considerarse una de ellas. Es un llamado de reflexión por el respeto a la vida animal en sus ecosistemas naturales. Con el solo hecho de haberlo leído es una contribución a la biodiversidad. Hasta una próxima entrega. But don't be sad, there are many actions of ecological awareness that are being raised through various NGOs, public agencies and communication initiatives however small they may seem, this post can be considered one of them.
