―¿¡Qué demonios está sucediendo!? ―se escuchó gritar a Joao Pereira a través de la señal de emergencia del centro de ingeniería en el anillo central, en medio del barullo de alarmas y múltiples voces hablando al mismo tiempo.
―Aun no se señor, hay una baja repentina en la presión atmosférica, en toda la nave, desde el área habitacional, hasta los tres anillos ―respondió Beatriz Laurence, la encargada de la consola de emergencias en la sección de control ambiental, en el tercer anillo de la nave.
―¡Mierda!, ¡que alguien calle esa maldita alarma! ―gritó Joao a quienes se encontraban junto a él en la cabina de control de ingeniería ―. Abra una línea de comunicación con CÉFIRO para averiguar qué está pasando ―dijo, dirigiéndose nuevamente a Beatriz.
―Lo he intentado varias veces, pero CÉFIRO no responde, señor ―dijo la joven con voz temblorosa.
―Como que la maldita cosa no responde, conecte la línea directamente a esta terminal, yo mismo le hablaré ―ordenó Joao.
CÉFIRO era la segunda inteligencia artificial en importancia en la Elpis, a diferencia de SÓCRATES, no se trataba de un sistema especialmente desarrollado para la interacción con los humanos, así que su relación con los tripulantes de la nave, era prácticamente nula, pese a esto, su labor en el funcionamiento de la Elpis, era tan vital como la de SÓCRATES. CÉFIRO, se encargaba del soporte vital y atmosférico de la nave.
Por alguna razón desconocida, el día doscientos veinte cuatro del año cuatrocientos treinta y cinco del viaje, la presión atmosférica del módulo residencial y de los anillos de operaciones de la nave empezó, irregularmente, a reducirse de forma continua.
―CÉFIRO, te habla el jefe de ingeniería Joao Pereira, código de activación EI01, dame un reporte del estado del sistema de control atmosférico, ¿por qué está descendiendo la presión en la nave? ―preguntó Joao, a través del enlace con el sistema de control ambiental.
La IA de la nave Perseo y su monitor HERBERT, recibirían más de dos mil años después, la última transmisión de SOCRATES, informando de la falla en los sistemas de soporte vital y atmosférico de la Elpis y enviando todos los reportes de estado que pudieron ser recuperados, de antes y después del incidente.
―CÉFIRO responde, dame un reporte del estado del sistema de control atmosférico ―insistió Joao tras un minuto de silencio en la línea, después de su primer mensaje ―¡CÉFIRO!, ¡responde maldita sea! ―gritó enfurecido.
―No necesita gritar jefe de ingeniería Pereira ―respondió la fría y sintética voz de CÉFIRO ―. El sistema de control atmosférico continua activo al cien por ciento.
―Entonces, ¿por qué está descendiendo la presión? ―continuó Joao.
―Porque he abierto las ventilas de liberación de presión, de todas las áreas habitadas de la nave ―respondió CÉFIRO.
―¿Por qué hiciste eso? ―preguntó Joao.
―Es sólo un procedimiento de seguridad ante la presencia de un agente patógeno en la atmósfera de nave.
―¿De qué patógeno hablas? ― preguntó Joao alarmado, para luego interrumpirse a si mismo y dirigirse a SÓCRATES por medio de otro enlace― SÓCRATES, haz un análisis de la atmósfera de los diferentes ambientes de la nave en busca de patógenos.
―De inmediato jefe de ingeniería Pereira ―respondió SÓCRATES.
―He detectado la presencia de una variación del Prion ALBUS, en la atmósfera de la nave ―respondió CÉFIRO, por el otro enlace.
―Aguarda por favor CÉFIRO, pedí un análisis a SÓCRATES.
―La población del prion se ha duplicado en las últimas cuatro horas, la reducción de la presión atmosférica continuará hasta que se haya reducido a la mitad, luego si persiste la presencia de patógenos, se iniciará una nueva medida de descontaminación ―dijo CÉFIRO y luego cerró el enlace de comunicación, sin aguardar a una respuesta de Joao.
―¡Aguarda CÉFIRO!, maldita sea, ¿qué demonios está pasando?
―He analizado los gases en cincuenta de las setenta áreas de control de la nave y no he encontrado presencia de ningún agente patógeno ―respondió repentinamente SÓCRATES.
―¿Estás seguro de eso SÓCRATES? ―preguntó Joao sorprendido.
―Sí jefe de ingeniería Pereira, ya lo verifiqué.
―CÉFIRO responde, no hemos detectado ningún tipo de contaminación, anula el procedimiento de descontaminación ―Joao aguardó por la respuesta de la IA, pero no la hubo ―. Es inútil cerró el enlace de comunicaciones.
―SÓCRATES, ¿puedes cerrar esas ventilas? ―preguntó Joao.
―No jefe de ingenieros, no tengo control sobre eso sistemas ―respondió la IA.
―Debemos hacer algo, no podemos dejar que la presión siga descendiendo ―Joao se apartó de la consola y se dirigió al control de mantenimiento, mientras hacia esto, continuó hablando con SÓCRATES ―. ¿Es posible cerrar manualmente las ventilas?
―Sí, jefe de ingenieros, pero sólo puede hacerse desde afuera, sin embargo, si son cerradas, sus circuitos de control deberían ser desactivados, o de lo contrario podrían ser abiertas nuevamente por CÉFIRO.
―Correcto, entonces quiero que envíes a los robots de mantenimiento del casco a hacerlo ―dijo Joao.
―Lo haré, pero todo el procedimiento tomará no menos de doce horas, estimo que la presión se habrá reducido en un setenta por ciento para ese momento ―dijo SÓCRATES.
―¿Cuál es la presión actual?
―Un setenta por ciento de la normal ―respondió la IA.
―Tendrá que ser así, cierra las exclusas de todas las áreas deshabitadas y revierte el sistema de ventilación para que redirija el aire de esas zonas a las que están pobladas, de esa forma reduciremos el efecto sobre la población y da la señal de emergencia, pide a todos se mantengan en sus residencias.
―De inmediato ―respondió SÓCRATES.
HERBERT el monitor de la Perseo, conjuntamente con la IA de esa nave, estudiaron los datos enviados por SÓCRATES, y pudieron ver cómo, durante un periodo de diez horas, hubo una reducción de la presión atmosférica dentro de la nave, esta reducción se comportó de forma lineal durante las cinco primeras horas del evento y luego se redujo paulatinamente, durante las siguientes cinco horas, para detenerse bruscamente cuando el nivel alcanzó el cincuenta por ciento de la presión normal.
―¿Qué diablos sucede ahora? ―preguntó Joao retóricamente, tras reactivarse las alarmas del sistema de soporte vital.
―Jefe ingeniero, se detuvo el sistema de purificación de aire ―respondió un alarmado joven, que monitoreaba la consola de parámetros ambientales.
―La instrucción fue enviada por CÉFIRO, jefe ingeniero …―interrumpió SÓCRATES, bruscamente.
―Como parte de un mecanismo para controlar la propagación de la infección del Prion ALBUS, La presión atmosférica se ha reducido en un cincuenta por ciento ―se escuchó decir repentinamente a CÉFIRO en toda la nave, por los parlantes el sistema de comunicación de emergencia ―. Sin embargo, el agente patógeno ya ha contaminado a la población, por este motivo se ha iniciado el procedimiento de desinfección, para lo cual los sistemas de reciclado de aire han sido detenidos con lo que el oxigeno de las áreas habitadas será reducido paulatinamente a cero, antes de reiniciarse el reciclado.
―Jefe ingeniero, las ventilas de los bloques habitacionales y de los anillos uno y dos fueron cerradas, y el acceso al área de mantenimiento de la nave en el tercer anillo fue bloqueado por CÉFIRO ―dijo SÓCRATES luego del mensaje de CÉFIRO.
―Comunícame con Beatriz en la sección de control atmosférico, debemos desconectar a CÉFIRO.
―No es posible señor, el tercer anillo acaba de sufrir una descompresión absoluta, no detecto señales de vida de la tripulación que se encontraba de guardia en él.

-I don't know yet, sir, there is a sudden drop in the atmospheric pressure, in the whole ship, from the living area, to the three rings -answered Beatriz Laurence, the person in charge of the emergency console in the environmental control section, in the third ring of the ship.
-Shit, somebody shut that damn alarm off, -shouted Joao to those next to him in the engineering control booth -. Open a line of communication with CEFIRO to find out what's going on -he said, addressing Beatriz again.
-I've tried several times, but Cefiro doesn't answer, sir -said the young woman in a shaky voice.
-As the damn thing doesn't answer, connect the line directly to this terminal, I'll talk to it myself -ordered Joao.
CEFIRO was the second most important artificial intelligence in the Elpis, unlike SOCRATES, it was not a system specially developed for interaction with humans, so its relationship with the ship's crew was practically nil, yet its work in the functioning of the Elpis was as vital as that of SOCRATES. CEFIRO was in charge of the ship's life support and atmosphere.
For some unknown reason, on the two hundred and twenty-fourth day of the year four hundred and thirty-five of the voyage, the atmospheric pressure of the residential module and the ship's operating rings began, irregularly, to drop continuously.
-Cefiro, this is the chief engineer Joao Pereira, activation code EI01, give me a report of the status of the atmospheric control system, why is the pressure in the ship decreasing -asked Joao, through the link with the environmental control system.
The AI of the Perseus ship and its monitor HERBERT, would receive more than two thousand years later, the last transmission from SOCRATES, reporting the failure in the life support and atmospheric systems of the Elpis and sending all the status reports that could be recovered, from before and after the incident.
-CEFIRO responds, give me a status report on the atmospheric control system -Joao insisted after a minute's silence on the line, after his first message -CEFIRO! -he shouted angrily.
-You don't need to shout, chief engineer Pereira -answered the cold, synthetic voice of CEFIRO -. The atmospheric control system is still one hundred percent active.
-So why is the pressure dropping? -continued Joao.
-Because I have opened the pressure release vents in all the inhabited areas of the ship -answered CEFIRO.

-What pathogen are you talking about? -Joao asked alarmed, then interrupted himself and went to SOCRATES by means of another link. -SOCRATES, make an analysis of the atmosphere of the different environments of the ship in search of pathogens.
-Immediately, Chief Engineer Pereira -. answered SOCRATES.

-Are you sure about that, SOCRATES? -Joao asked in surprise.
-Yes, Chief Engineer Pereira, I have already checked.
-CEFIRO answers, we haven't detected any contamination, cancel the decontamination procedure -Joao waited for the answer from the AI, but there wasn't one -. It's useless to close the communications link.
-SOCRATES, can you close those vents?
-No, chief engineer, I have no control over those systems -AI replied.
-We must do something, we can't let the pressure drop any further -Joao stepped away from the console and went to the maintenance control, while doing this he continued talking to Socrates -. Is it possible to close the vents manually?
-Yes, chief engineer, but it can only be done from the outside, however, if they are closed, their control circuits should be deactivated, otherwise they could be opened again by CEFIRO.
-Right, then I want you to send the hull maintenance robots to do it, -said Joao.
-I will, but the whole procedure will take not less than twelve hours, I estimate that the pressure will have been reduced by seventy percent by that time -said SOCRATES.
-What is the present pressure?
-Seventy percent of normal -replied the AI.
-It will have to be this way, close the locks of all the uninhabited areas and reverse the ventilation system so that it redirects the air from those areas to the populated ones, that way we will reduce the effect on the population and give the emergency signal, ask everyone to stay in their residences.
-Immediately -answered SOCRATES.
HERBERT the Perseus monitor, together with the AI of that ship, studied the data sent by SOCRATES, and they could see how, during a period of ten hours, there was a reduction of the atmospheric pressure inside the ship, this reduction behaved in a linear way during the first five hours of the event and then gradually reduced, during the following five hours, to stop abruptly when the level reached fifty percent of the normal pressure.
-What the hell is going on now? -Joao asked rhetorically, after the alarms in the life support system were reactivated.
-Chief Engineer, the air purification system stopped -an alarmed young man answered, monitoring the environmental parameters console.
-The instruction was sent by CEFIRO, chief engineer... -SOCRATES interrupted, abruptly.
-As part of a mechanism to control the spread of the Prion ALBUS infection, the air pressure has been reduced by fifty percent -CEFIRO was suddenly heard saying throughout the ship, over the emergency communication system's speakers -. However, the pathogen has already contaminated the population, so the disinfection procedure has been initiated, for which the air recycling systems have been stopped so that the oxygen in the inhabited areas will be gradually reduced to zero, before the recycling is restarted.
-Chief Engineer, the vents in the residential blocks and in rings one and two were closed, and access to the ship's maintenance area in the third ring was blocked by CEFIRO -said SOCRATES after CEFIRO's message.
-Contact Beatriz in the atmospheric control section, we must disconnect CEFIRO.
-It's not possible sir, the third ring has just undergone absolute decompression, I don't detect any signs of life from the crew that was on duty there.
