Abia and the Nurse

C.S.S. fared worse in the free-for-all fight. The reason was that S.AS. also ran an Advance Level programme that admitted more mature students. That meant that they could throw heavier missile and give harder punches. Meanwhile, many students of both schools, including Abia, were hospitalized for various injuries sustained during the fight. C.S.S. had more casualties than S.A.S.

The principals of both schools couldn't get in touch with parents and guardians of the affected students. They shuttled between the Ministry of Education and the Police Station daily.

Though, the incident was reported over the radio. Abia had remained in the hospital for over a week, and his father hadn't heard about it. His father had travelled out on a business trip before the incident.

Many parents and guardians began to visit their children and wards after a few days. They rendered assistance in all forms, especially in drugs. Those who had minor injuries were treated and discharged within a few days.

Abia's condition was bad, and he had many months to stay in the hospital. A nurse in the hospital showed a greater interest in Abia when she heard that the boy had no mother and his father was yet to come back from a business trip.

Perhaps his father's house helps could have visited him if they had heard about his condition, the nurse thought.

Apart from the general meal given to patients by the hospital authority, She prepared food from her home and brought to him always. She also took much time to nurse the injuries he sustained at the upper part of his head and arm.

The nurse noted that his injuries were gotten from the cement block meant for the building of the stadium's canteen. Abia was seriously wounded. He didn't recognize any of the thugs brought by S.A.S.

Abia saw the nurse as a good woman who feared God. He heard her sing religious melodies. She gave him a Bible and church hymnal. She also instructed him to read the Bible and pray before he slept.

Abia, I've brought you a Bible and church hymnal. You should read the Bible and pray at least twice daily morning and evening,' said the nurse. 'Thank you, nurse,' said Abia.'By the way, can you pray?' asked the nurse. 'Yes, of course,' answered Abia, 'if you don't know how to pray, I'll teach you,' said the nurse jokingly.

She mentioned certain portions of the Bible that he should read, which was essential to relieve him of his thoughts and feelings. The Biblical portions he was asked to read by the nurse added spiritual healing, too.

Before then, Abia was only interested in a few portions of the Bible that had something to do with his examination in religious studies. He could quote a considerable number of verses in these portions during he examination period and soon forget about them after exams.

Abia read the subject because of his interest in becoming a lawyer, and that was when the course counsellor visited his school in his third year.

Abia was still unable to lift up his arm without assistance after two months of stay in the hospital. The wound he sustained on the head healed, but his left arm was bandaged and held across the neck to lessen the pain. The wound was severe and had affected his muscles.

His father visited the hospital twice when he came back from his usual tour. He was aware of the general fight and the benevolent attitude of the nurse to Abia since he was hospitalized

He wanted to apportion blame on Abia, but the sight of other maimed students convinced him that the fault was not his alone. Again, he felt that Abia's condition was so pathetic and needed no such utterance as blame.
