INTRODUCTION
I am not against betting or the existence of betting platforms. What am really against and want to stress out is the maximum involvement or should I say aggressive betting which has led to many economic and mental embarrassment amongst Nigerian youths.
Youths with little or no source of income begin betting and get addicted to it thus lavishing money meant for usefulness on betting with no return of profits. This is very bad and at such the community is at risk.
The worst is that they get motivated by the wrong people who will only tell them of the benefits and ignore the huge consequences. Sports betting, no doubt is a nice way of making money but the risk involved in it is bogus.
The betting platform has grown from just betting live matches to betting of virtual and other games of which in some cases renders most youths useless, turning them into thieves and what ought not just to get money to bet a game.
I haven't even mentioned those that make it as a daily routine to play bet, talkless of going hungry just to play.
IS SPORTS BETTING A SOURCE OF MAKING MONEY?
As I have earlier mentioned, sports betting is not bad but the approach to which we are seeing today by many Nigerian youths.
Officially Bet9ja which is the giant of sports betting in Nigeria and the world at large which is also the second most visited platform too is mostly occupied by teens and youths who clail that they are hustling for daily bread.
I cannot truly answer the question if sports betting is a source of income because the games vetted upon are basically on luck. But aggressive betting has its effect of which ill mention below.
CAUSES OF AGGRESSIVE BETTING
Well betting as a whole can start from just mere interactions amongst peers or gradually indulging in the act. Here are some of the causes of aggressive betting.
Peer pressure influence
Greed and uncontentment.
Lack of money and desire to try new ways of getting money.
Love of football and trying to proove a point with people of the other team.
CONSEQUENCES OF AGGRESSIVE BETTING
Aggressive betting is not good. I really hope our youths get to see this post. I might think that if i bet some money on a team to win and they win I'll get double or triple of what i put in. But what if it dosent work out as planned? What will i face?
Aggressive sports betting put someones economic life at risk:
Imagine im a worker who is earning salary and I am a victim of aggressive betting. That is to say i cannot stay without betting and thinking to win more money. At the end i end up wasting a whole month salary on betting going home with nothing. Also imagine someone who is not working but you find them every day in that betting house how come?.It can lead to social evil vices like stealing and Armed robbery:
When a victim is running out of money and the urge comes for him to play or something comes up that he needs money for, it can propel him to start stealing or enter into arm robbery which can end his life or put him behind bars.Public embarrassment and ridicule:
There was a story of a student in the university who was so addicted to sports betting that when his parents gave him money for his school fees , he decided to try out an idea his friends gave him that he can double, triple etc the money and save some for flexing. He then went ahead to bet a football match. The game didnt go as planned and he lost his school fees thus not paying his fees. He later got embarrassed publicly when he failed to pay his school fees and was sent out during his final semester exams. See what betting can do to people and much more.
Aggressive betting should be minimized as it cannot help a Nigerian youth. Better find yourself something to do.
