The sunflower flower was already present in Greek mythology which depicts it as the lover of the sun, Helios. Clytie, a water nymph, was loved by Helios and the two had a passionate relationship. But one day, as in all love stories in Greek mythology, Helios fell in love with Clytie's sister, Leucothoé. Clythie, mad with jealousy, denounced the relationship to her father, who became enraged, buried Leucothoé alive. Helios, disgusted by this betrayal, did not return to Clytie, who let himself waste away on a rock staring at his beloved sun, Helios, for days on end. Helios finally took pity on the nymph and turned her into a sunflower. sunflower meaning The sunflower flower is now known and cultivated all over the world, in Central Europe, the United States, and in France also mainly in the southern and western regions.
