My Played Video Games Review: Ballz for the Sega Genesis

Ballz is a versus fighting video game for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive and other consoles of its time. It was developed by PF Magic (now owned by Ubisoft) and published by Accolade in 1994.

This was the first fighting game I played with the "3D look". Even though it was just a false 3D effect. The characters made up of balls and lacking in personality could maybe what made it unpopular in the Street Fighter crazy gaming world of that time.

The Story

It is an all-out fight to the finish with 8 unique characters and 8 bosses that hit, slam, taunt and fart on their opponents. Ballz even has a replay that shows you the damage from almost any angle. And with 3X more special moves than those flatty 2-D games, you're going to be doing plenty of damage. Characters will even morph into other characters!. Featuring weird sound effects and a funny scoreboard.

The Graphics and Sound

It is a 3D type of game that features fighters made out of different colored balls in different designs to set the fighters apart. The moves that you do are pretty interesting to watch! Some of the better detailing comes with the backgrounds that you fight on. No flaring super moves or anything else here. This is only straight-up fighting.

The music is not that bad, but it is not that great either. It is not that memorable. Each stage and character has a musical track that sounds a little childish. The sound effects are also standard fare with nothing impressive.

The Gameplay

You choose a character that has a certain set of moves according to its ball structure, and you fight through the stages beating an opponent. When you finish, they explode into a pile of bouncing balls, and you continue onto the next match. Having it done with a three-dimensional frame in mind, you can move in some directions that do not always help you, but it does add up some extra strategy to help with the overall gameplay.

Most of the moves are done like Street Fighter, so anyone with experience in that will have no trouble learning how to pull off the limited special moves and attacks

The replay value is not good, but not bad. You might try the other characters for fun.

My Verdict

Ballz is a strange fighting game for the kiddy side of us. With simple characters, simple moves, and simple gameplay, there really is not much challenge for a technical kind of gamer. It takes a little bit of time to get used to. Anyone who is looking for a game that is deep should probably look towards other fighting games on the system.

Play it on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive or on a dependable emulator. Try to play versus with a friend.

Let's keep on gaming in the free world!

OMG!!! i used to play this game on a console called 3do !!! It was such a weird and fun game i just remember the balls your bringing back great memories

Damn, the 3DO! Never had it but I desired it. Good thing the PS1 later I got proved it was inferior.

Yea the 3da was WEIRD ill tell you that much... It was kind of revolutionary but the games were pure junk lol...

My favorite game was this Cops and Robbers game wehre you used a little laser gun at the time it was so scary at that age lol... I would always turn the console off and run out of the room is how i remember it lol. i must of been 3-5 years old lol. My dads cousin who worked at EB Games at the time snagged it for me for like my birthday or something between it being traded in / his discount and such i think it ended up being pretty cheap...

I wish i still had it but its been a memory for a long time now.

Those memories are gold!
