This photo, captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission on September 30, 2021, shows the flow of volcanic eruptions on the Spanish island of La Palma. A mound of mud could be seen flowing into the Atlantic Ocean, increasing the size of the coast. The ‘lava delta’ covered about 20 hectares while the photo was taken.

A volcanic eruption in Cumbre Vieja on September 19, threw ashes into the air. Lava went down the mountain and passed through the villages covering everything in its path. By September 28, a 6-mile [6 km] flow of mud had reached the sea on the west coast of the island. Clouds of white smoke have been reported when hot red lava hits the water in the Playa Nueva area.

This Sentinel-2 image is processed in true color, using a short channel infrared channel to highlight the lava flow. The work of Sentinel-2 is based on the star of two identical satellites, each containing a multi-colored image with 13 different bands observing changes in the earth and vegetation of the earth.

In the picture above, the work of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 gives us a spectacular view of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the Spanish Canary Island of La Palma. The volcano erupted on September 19, days after a small earthquake.
This photo, taken on September 20, 2021, was processed using an infrared mission band to show the ongoing work on the volcano.
