Gegenpressing is currently one of the most popular pressing tactics in modern football. Gegenpressing is becoming more and more popular among the coaches as most of the football teams now play high-intensity press-based physical football. Though The first German coach is Klinsmann to play gegenpressing or counter-pressing in modern football, Borussia Dortmund and their then-coach Jurgen Klopp took gegenpressing to another level. Also, Pep Guardiola's Barcelona, Bayern Munich of Yup Heynckes has applied gegenpressing very effectively. Although some of the top clubs in Europe have gone through a lot of evolution at the moment, many mid-range clubs are also putting the opponent on the shelf with quick intensive pressing through Gegenpressing. Currently, European football clubs include Liverpool, Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, Hans Flick's Bayern Munich, Ten Hag's Ajax, Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds United, and Gasparini's Atlanta are implementing Gegenpressing beautifully.

"About Gegenpressing"

Gegenpressing is a pressing tactic where a team attempts to take possession of the ball possession immediately instead of being organized by dropping back to defense after losing ball possession. The main goal of Gagenpressing is to prevent the opponent's counter-attack and regain control of the match by regaining the ball possession. Generally, the positioning of a team can be divided into two parts, when the team has under ball position and off the ball positioning. The transition period between in possession and off the ball position is when a team loses possession while having ball possession. In the case of gegenpressing, the goal of the players is to regain the ball position within this transition period before moving to an off-the-ball position. In this case, with the loss of possession, the opposing team's ball carrier is given quick intensive pressing for the purpose of recovering the instant ball. There are a number of factors that need to be maintained in order to successfully implement Gagenpressing. The most important thing, in this case, is the organization among the players. Players have to be very good positioning among themselves and keep the ball carrier space as constricted as possible. The most important thing is to force the ball holder to make an immediate decision with pressure. As a result, the ball career will panic and play long ball or wrong pass. As a result, the possibility of regaining possession will increase a lot. Players need to take positions close to each other so that the ball carrier can be pressed like a swarm of bees as the ball loses position. In the case of Gagenpressing, creating a triangle and pressing is much more effective. This article is written based on 101-tactics, pavilion and goal.com. "Types of Gegenpressing"

  • Zone Oriented Gegenpressing:

In this type of Gaganpressing, pressing is started immediately after the loss of ball position in the opponent's third by constricting the zone of the ball carrier. The main goal is to create a tight space around the ball carrier to force him to make a quick decision. During this time the ball was surrounded from all sides of his career and the player is isolated from his teammates. Due to the tight space, the ball carrier is forced to circulate the fastball with quick decision. As a result, the ball holder will panic and play a wrong pass or try to play a long ball, in both cases the chances of regaining possession are much higher.

In zone-oriented pressing, players need to have equal skill in both balls intercepting and quick tackling skills. In this case, it is seen that only the player closest to the ball presses directly but two or more teammates closest to him take quick runs towards the ball or directly towards the ball holder. This forces the ball holder to pass quickly and makes it easier for the player closest to him to win the ball. The club's Liverpool is currently seen making such pressures.

  • Man to Man Gegenpressing:

In this type of gegenpressing, after losing possession in the opponent's third, one or two people close to the ball start pressing the ball carrier directly. The rest of the players tightly mark the opponent players in their zone and completely block the passing option of the ball carrier. Then the ball carrier is forced to try to play through ball or long ball. In this case, there is a very good possibility to regain possession.

In the case of Man Oriented Gagenpressing, every player on the team has to have high physicality and strong tackling ability in One Versus One Dual. Because there is a lot of one-on-one duel due to the man-to-man mark, then the ball possession has to be regained by quick tackle. For this reason, the ball interception skills of the players are not very good but they have to be strong in tackling and aerial. In recent times, Bayern Munich and Leeds United have been seen to do such man-to-man gegenpressing.

  • Passsing Lane oriented Gegenpressing:

In the case of such gegenpressing, if the opponent loses the ball position in the third, the player closest to the ball career will force the ball carrier to pass quickly by pressing directly. The rest of the teammates will mark the players in their zone immediately. However, the exception, in this case, is that even if marked, the ball holder will be given a chance to pass to the marked player. If the ball holder passes, Immediate will try to intercept the ball by blocking that passing channel.

In lane-oriented gegenpressing, there is more emphasis on intercepting the ball than tackling or one-on-one duel. For this, the players have to have very good interception skills Pep Guardiola's pressing type is very much like this.

  • Ball Oriented Gegenpressing:

In this type of gegenpressing, the only goal of the players is to regain the ball position in any way without relying on any specific tactics or system. As a result, without following any specific structure, all the players around the ball press the ball carrier with high intensity and thus try to recover the position. The biggest problem with this type of pressing is that a lot of energy is wasted due to the over-aggressive mentality of the players.

Moreover, since there is no specific structure, huge space is created only if the ball can be circulated to the teammates from the ball carrier pressing zone and the teammates can create easy goal scoring chances through this. Such a pressing system was seen in Dutch football in the '70s In total football, every player had to give full area cover, so this type of pressing system matched them very well. However, in recent times, no football team has been seen doing ball-oriented gaganpressing.

"Variations of Gegenpressing in modern football"

Although Gegenpressing became popular in modern football with the help of Jurgen Klopp, many other coaches, including Hans, Guardiola, and Marcelo Bielsa have contributed to making Gagenpressing more organized and impactful.

  • Pep Guardiola's Variation:

The main basis of Pep's football philosophy is to hold the ball possession and try to recover the ball quickly by pressing on any position on the field if the position is lost. The basic concept of Guardiola's Gaganpressing was the 6-second rule. This means that players will continue to press for 6 seconds to lose ball possession. In the meantime, if you can regain the position, they will start building back up by backing up their own transitions. But if they fail to regain the position within this allotted time, they will back up in a defensive shape and wait for their miss by allowing the opponent to hold the ball. Pep's team tried to block the opponent's passing lane and press to retrieve the ball. In other words, Pep's main theory was passing lane-oriented Gaganpressing. Another specific aspect of Pep's gaganpressing was that after regressing the ball by counter-pressing, he would start building from the backline again without going to the quick counter.

  • Marcelo Bielsa's Variation:

The main philosophy of Marcelo Bielsa's playstyle is to continue free-flowing football and to retrieve the ball by high physical gag pressure in case of loss of ball possession. In this case, Bielser's pressing style is man-to-man oriented gaganpressing. Bielsa plays one more man than the opponent's forwards in the defensive third in his formation setup. As a result, Opponent Third has fewer players than Opponent. In this case, with the loss of ball possession, the ball carrier is forced to play long ball by marking each player in the opponent's third with the player closest to them. Bielsa players have a better chance of regaining possession in the second ball due to their good skills in an aerial ball. The defense has one more defender than the opponent players. In this case, a center back plays the role of cover man without marking anyone. In the Bielsa system that defender is called Flair Man. Flair Man has no man-marking duty and his only role is to prevent the opponent from exploding free space if he moves forward by holding the ball with the opponent gegenpressing and giving free space cover left by the teammates.

  • Variation of Jurgen Klopp:

In the case of Gagenpressing, the main method of the club is to maintain high intensity and press continuously. Everyone on the team penetrates the ball holder and tries to recover the ball quickly in the opponent's third. This will allow them to quickly counter-attack as soon as they recover the ball. In terms of pressing, the club's main concept is to press the opposition hard and fast and exploit the space of their own strikers to create goal-scoring chances. They create a pressing trap in the club opponent third to surround the ball carrier and isolate him from the teammates. Normal means and Salah block the passing lane between the centerbacks and fullbacks by taking a position in the space between them. Firmino then drops down a bit and blocks the passing lane between center back and defensive midfield. As a result, the center back panicked and tried to give the long ball to the midfield and the Liverpool midfielders intercepted the ball and started the counter-attack.
