Eric IDE, a great replacement for your editor/IDE

in Python4 years ago

Before I start I most say I am a command line addict, and enjoy editing and even watching videos from the commandline. Not the actual command line, but you know using a command line aplication like mplayer or vlc filename.mp4.

When it comes to code I like my vim and emacs. Learning their shortcuts and mastering some of the most popular plugins. I have been coding in python for the longest so is great to be a Python maximalist. Lately VScode and a bit older Sublime text editor has taken a lot of the developers preferences.

There is always a little rivarly between the old grey beards developers like me (althought I am not old) being proficient using the ultra fast command line, while other GUI impaired developers loving their Eclipse, NetBeans and later on Textmate and finally VSCode.

However as a Python Maximalist I see another crew coming along which tried to do stuff the Python way and end up trying to learn Python using the default IDE. Built on TCL and with some issues between Python3 and Python 2, they try to code in python using IDLE. Soon they push for a more user friendly IDE which is PyCharm, and they usually stick to it.

However PyCharm is not built on Python, and neither is IDLE for that matter. So I would love to start pushing a better option. Here comes Eric, a relatively obscure IDE that has been between the python community for a while, but most people because it hasnt really been pushed by the community, a normal acceptance.

Eric IS built in Python and has a very good integration to Python 3 as well as other Python tools like, VirtualEnv, Qt5, and other tools and frameworks like Git and even Django plugin.

Also is very easy to install, just pip install eric-ide and you will be on your way to have a feature full platform to develop all type of fun python projects. Compared to other editor like Jupyter Notepad and such.
