THE BLACK RAT SNAKE (Pantherophis obsoletus)

in Amazing Nature4 years ago

Finally, a second one of these incredible creatures!

With the one exception of these eating eggs and young poultry, there isn't much not to like about this snake. We are blessed to be able to see several every year, and this is the second one this year so far. They are rather defensive, hence the gaping mouth in some of the photos, but if left to their own, they stay away from people.

By playing important roles in the ecosystem like eating mice and rats, they help keep the balance of things, which helps us too. A plague of mice could easily destroy our garden, so we are happy to see them around, as long as they aren't caught eating our eggs or chicks. Enjoy the photos!
