Ringnecks (Diadophis punctatus) - The Snake That Eluded Me For Decades

Once again, I've located them!

Back in my native Wisconsin, I was rather familiar with the vast majority of reptiles and amphibians. Much like birds, fish, and mammals, I enjoy reptiles and amphibians and also enjoy interacting with them. Of all the snake species native to Wisconsin, a few eluded me for all the years I lived there, the Ringneck snakes being one such species.

After our move to the Ozarks in 2015, things changed. While Ringnecks are a nocturnal and secretive species, they can readily be found by flipping rocks or logs. Apparently, they are a rather common species here, which allowed me not only to locate my first one ever, but many since. While helping a friend plant 200 trees recently, I stumbled upon three Ringnecks when moving a log. Here's some photos of one of them. Enjoy the photos!
