It was a pulsating match, one typical of a premier league fixture as Brentford held Liverpool to a thrilling 3-3 draw in the late kick off on Saturday.

A game that saw Mohammed Salah join the league of 100 goals scored for Liverpool, was the first league meeting between both sides since 1974, when they played out a 1-1 draw which eventually saw to the relegation of Brentford from the top-flight, with Liverpool going on to win the league that season.

Action was intense all through and there was a scare in the 6th minute when Pontus Ajer and Curtis Jones clashed heads while both trying to meet a cross from Jordan Henderson. Both players were, however, able to continue after receiving medical attention.

Liverpool were the first to harass Brentford's goal in the 7th minute when Jones won the ball well for Diogo Jota to free Salah on goal. His shot went under the oncoming Raya, but was cleared off the line by the relentless Ajer.

Joel Matip was the next to clear the ball off his goal line after Bryan Mbeumo had been put through on goal and clipped the ball over Alisson Becker.

The home side would draw the first blood in the 27th minute. A cross from Canos was met in the six yard box by Ivan Toney, who flicks it on and the ball finds its way to the far post were Ethan Pinnick was liking to poke home.

In an instant response, four minutes later, Liverpool leveled things. Virgil van Dijk orchestrating the move from the back to find Salah, before Jordan Henderson hurled a cross into the box, beating Ajer and falls to to the head of Jota. Who doesn't miss from close range.

Jota should have doubled his tally in the 39th minute. A fierce shot from Jones came off the post and Jota was the first to react on the rebound, but his effort was denied by Raya.

10 minutes later, in the opening stages of the second half, Jota, again finds himself in a good position. A cross from Andy Robertson is flicked on the near post by Henderson. The ball catches Jota, who is unaware and was rolling in, before Raya scrambled to save.

Liverpool's pressure finally yielded their second goal in the 54th minute as Fabinho lofted a beautiful pass beyond the Brentford defence to the far post for the waiting Salah, who side-footed the effort into the post off Raya. Although the flag was raised against him initially, the goal was given after VAR review. He becomes the fastest player to reach a century of league goals fore the Reds.

Brentford were not in the mood to give up as they tied things up in the 63rd minute. A scramble in front of the Liverpool goal saw Kristoffer Hanson hit an overhead kick, which came off the bar and unto the path of Vitaly Janelt, whose initial header was up in the air, but he immediately followed it up with the second header and into the back of the net.

Liverpool wasted no time in regaining the lead four minutes later, as Jone capped a busy evening with a goal for himself. His long range effort took a wicked deflection off Ajer to beat Raya and give the Reds what looked like the winning goal.

Salah should have wrapped things up for Liverpool in the 77th minute when he had only Raya to beat. With the goalkeeper rushing towards him, the Egyptian chips the ball but could only manage to land the ball on the roof of the net.

Lighting would strike again for the visitors as Thomas Frank's boys made it 3-3 with eight minutes of the duration left to play. Liverpool seemed uncomfortable with the balls into their box and another scramble this time allowed substitute, Yoanne Wissa to dink one into the net from a tight angle.

Brentford almost recorded a famous victory in the dying stages from a counter attack that allowed Toney through on the right side of attack. His effort well into the bottom corner was ruled out for offside.

Concluding Thoughts

The attacking prowess of Liverpool is never in doubt, but once again, they have proven vulnerable in defence. Throughout the game they looked uncomfortable with the balls whipped in by the hosts, from which the Bees got two of their goals. This would be a cause of concern for a Jurgen Klopp if his team meets a more disciplined side that could score and shut their doors.

Brentford are having a dream start to their life back in the top flight. Currently in 9th position with 9 points from their first six games with just one loss, Thomas Frank must be proud of their achievement so far and should keep taking each game as they come.
