Without doubt, God uses ordinary people, but He uses extraordinary people as well. The same God who chose to use Rahab, Gideon and the woman of Samaria that same God chose Daniel, David and Paul. God’s relationship with David is one of the most amazing in the Bible and equally remarkable is the person of David.
Jesse’s last-born son would, on the one hand, appear to be the bona fide runt of the pack in the household, when he was first to be introduced to Samuel the prophet. But nothing can be further from the truth. A little boy who killed a lion and a bear had to be an exceptional fellow.
Oh, a boy who while watching over his father’s flocked composed lyrics of the most worshipful kind to his Creator definitely could not have been the runt of the pack. Who taught David the skills of composition but the Lord? Who gave David such prodigy in music even demons became subdued when they heard the praise of the majesty of God as he made music on the harp, and refrained from harassing the tormented soul of Saul?
David was, in fact, a maestro! I am sure you recognize the lyrical rendition of the Psalms makes the Bible one of the most poetic books ever. David was the gem of the house of Jesse; he was a star after God’s pattern! While men were looking after an Eliab, after mere outward appearances, the Lord was piecing together the inner man, the giant inside of His chosen. David was established as the Lord’s chosen bearing the stamp of originality and not of man’s superficiality.
