They started building a tunnel into the hillside on the far side of the bridge, but then a major flood hit in 1936 and washed out most of the road up there and it was never rebuilt so the bridge was abandoned. Later the tunnel entrance was collapsed in.

Wow, a long time for a bridge to nowhere. Do they do any maintenance on the bridge, or does it just kind of sit there falling slowly apart?
It was bought by a private company in 1989. They do bungee jumping off the bridge!

Yes. I'm glad Bungee America owns it. If the forest service ever gets their hands on that property they will probably destroy it.
