COFFEE AND KAREEM - MOVIE REVIEW

in Writing & Reviews3 years ago

Saturdays usually present a good window for a movie or two so I made it a point to sit through a good one this afternoon. Usually I just pick either action-filled or dramatic movies but as I watched a few trailers on youtube, this one stuck out to me. This is actually one of those movies that begs the question "why haven't I heard of it before?". I had a good impression of it on first sight so why not sit through it. Here is a gist of what it entailed.

CAST

What gingered me to even proceed from here was the fact that it starred some of my favorite actors including Teraji P. Henson (known for lively and energetic roles as seen in the likes of Empire) and Ed Helms (a shining star from his role in The office). Other leading characters who had significant impact included Terrence Little Gardenhigh and Betty Gilpin. Actually the role of Betty Gilpin came as a surprise to me initially but it is surely becoming a role she plays comfortably but we'll get into all of that soon. A full cast list can be seen below.

ABOUT THE MOVIE - SPOILER ALERT

Like most step father situations, the relationship between Coffee (Ed Holmes) and Kareem (Terrence Gardenhigh) didn't kick off running either. As a matter of fact it was quite the rollercoaster. On one had is Koffee, a regular police officer who is trying his best to take care of his newly found love, Vanessa Manning (Teraji P. Henson/Kareem's mother). And on the other hand is Kareem who is making all efforts to split these two apart.

But that's not all the problem Coffee has on his plate, as there is a crooked cop situation right in his very own precinct. No one smelt a wind of this till they actually framed him for the improper retrain of a suspect that led to his escape. Nobody knew it was an actual prison break caught live on camera. All they people thought was "how reckless could he be?". Even Coffee thought so himself.

It wasn't until he got caught up between actual drug dealers and phoned for help that he actually realized that the men he had trusted to watch his back were the very same ones flooding the streets with drugs and looking to cause damage to the people he loves and care about.

Watch how Coffee puts his life and safety on the line time and time again with the thrill seeking girlfriend's son who grows to actually like him.

RECOMMENDATION

Personally, I don't think this movie got the full credit it deserved based on the ratings and reviews I have seen so far. Fine, they tend to sway a little bit from the story line they initially presented but that takes nothing away from the comedy and love story it was trying to depict. For this reason, I render an 8.0 ratings and recommend to users who like comedy and dramatic movies.
