The Cold Embrace

He crept into the room quietly.
The lady he'd come for was standing next to the white table with the coffee maker on top, and holding a cup of the dark brown liquid in her hands. She was having a conversation with her colleague; her friend in his mid thirties. Their conversation moved smoothly; it seemed as though they had been friends for a long time. She wasn't expecting the man, the entity, neither of them were. He crept in closer. He enjoyed listening to the conversations of those he came for, right before he got them.
"I love him so so much! Really, I must be the happiest woman in the world right now. We're gonna go to the Alps for the honeymoon you know..." she said sweetly with a faraway look in her eyes.
Her friend smiled "I'm happy for you Joan."
He smiled too and crept up behind her.
She went on "I'm happy too. I can't believe-"
She was cut short as he embraced her. Her eyes widened and her breath stopped. Her grip on the cup loosened and it fell to the tiled floor with a loud crash and shattered, spilling the hot, murky liquid.
Her chest heaved.
Her friend shouted.
"Joan! Joan! What's wrong?! Somebody help! Joan! We need help!"
But it was all futile.
Her chest heaved two more times and her eyes rolled back into her skull.
She was gone.
Beside her he stood, watching and smiling as her essence drifted away into the great beyond.
He began to move, on to his next target.
He was Death.
And many times... he was closer than they'd ever thought.
