Torsten Krol: The Dolphin People Book Review

image.png

I don't usually read books even though i got plenty, to be honest. The main reason is the lack of time but when i do, i can read a 400-page book in 3-4 days. Around a month ago, i had free time and so i searched through my bookshelves for a title that i haven't read yet. I stumbled upon a generally "small" book with around 150 pages from Torsten Krol that is called The Dolphin People.

Before i start reviewing the book let me tell you something "weird" that i do before reading one book. I never check or read anything for the Author and the reason why i do it, is because i don't want to be biased. Thus, i read the book and after reading it i searched about Torsten Krol who is quite the enigma.

Apparently, nobody knows who the author is and only some speculations around himself. Some believe that he is a known Author but for some reason, he also has this alias to write. What is known though, is that he had given only 2 interviews one in 2018 and another one in 2019. Anyway, let's start with the review!

The Dolphin People Plot

A little bit after the end of WWII, Erich, a 16 years old German boy along with his mother and little brother travel all the way to Venezuela to join their uncle Klaus. According to Klaus, they need to move further for their protection and start a new life. While they are on their way doing so, with a plane, due to a huge storm the plane crashes in the middle of the Amazon rainforest.

There the family will try to survive doing everything they can. At first, they don't know anything but soon they are discovered by Yayomi a tribe living there which as you understand are far from technology. The tribe seeing their totally white skin believes they are dolphins in human form. In other words, they think of them as something like a warrior god.

Due to that belief, they are treating them with respect and they follow along as they need to survive. Soon though they will start to learn more about the tribe, they will need to follow some of their traditions, and to add to that they will also find out about the tribe's enemies. Aside from that as the pace starts to becoming faster and faster the Protagonist along with his family will have to face dilemmas like fighting or running, surviving or be real, and many more!

What I Liked and What I Didn't

One of the things that i particularly like was the "element of surprise". When you start reading the book you expect this to be a family adventure and such. The reality is much different though, as the more you dive into the book and continue to read it, the more you realise how dark and gruesome it is.

You can expect to see everything in this book like violence, the feeling of loneliness, the feeling of survival at its finest, hope, love, lust, sadness, courage even sexual abnormality. It's magnificent, to say the least, to have so many emotions and feelings coming out in such a small book.

Another thing that was amazing, is the character development. At first, everyone may seem ok, but as we learn more and more and as the characters interacting with the environment we get to see all of their sides. We get to see their past, their goals and reactions, and of course how each individual is facing this event and how much they are affected.

You won't believe the end as well! The only thing i didn't like was that the story seemed to me short but to tell you the truth maybe that was the purpose in the first place. Note that, this book might not be for everyone as it can be "hard to read" with all these dark and "disturbing" scenes.

That post was a part of a contest which you can find here a contest run by @belenguerra, @writingnreviews & @fendit. Ahh i think i will start reading another book this week!
