Steemit Engagement Challenge S5-W1|My traditional Wear: AGBADA and IRO AND BUBA

in Hot News Communitylast year

Traditional native wears are important that are important in our culture and tradition. It tells us more about a culture and tradition since it is among the elements of culture
Yoruba wears and one of the traditional wears in West Africa that is known worldwide because of the impact it has in fashion and also in other African countries.

Before the coming of the European to the yorubaland or to Nigeria as a whole, do you buy only had weaving clothes which were available by use of a piece of thick woven cloth called ibante.

This ibante was later started to be used rom aso-oke. Some of these types of aso-oke materials include etu, petuje, san-an-yan, alaaari and so on.

For men’s wear, they have buba, esiki and sapara, which are regarded as ewu awotele or under wear, while they also have dandogo, agbada, gbariye, sulia and oyala, which are also known as ewu awoleke or over wears. The Yoruba has different traditional wears,Some of them include

1.AGBADA

This traditional wear is a popular were among the men in Yoruba land. They tend to wear these clothes during a celebration or an events like weddings, burial ceremony and other traditional ceremony. Agbada is an affordable wear but it is ranges from 15000 naira which in steem value worth around 100 steem and above depending on the quality there was an Agbada that trended during 2016 which was worn by a Ebuka Obi-Uchendu to an engagement ceremony which he said it cost up to 250000 naira which is also worth around 1600 steem for his stylist to come up with it and they are also some other Agbada wears.

The durability of Agbada is unlimited due to the quality of the fabrics that is used for it .A clear examples is a client that made an Agbada for his wedding and he also put same Agbada a year later during the salah period of the Muslim.

Agbada has been welcomed to different part of the world as we see some foreigners come from oversea to marry from Nigeria and they put on during the wedding ceremony and also they are some of our brothers overseas that put on during their project defence, cultural day in school and all other events abroad.

Though it is glaring that the African has similarities in their wears unlike the Europeans that they look different, but it has been generally accepted in most of the world andAalso it's has enhance the popularity of not only Agabda but also Yoruba and Nigeria as a whole .

2 IRO AND BUBA

This is a wear for women in Yoruba land that is mostly worn to occasion like wedding, burial ceremony, house warming and lots more.It has been in existence before the arrival of the Europeans in Nigeria. It's made from aso-oke like that of that of Agbada,It can be said that it is the female version wear of Agbada .The iro and buba is not complete without the gel on the head.

The gele is wear on the head and it had different ways it is put on,the ladies also like to add some additional items on their iro and buba like stones and other materials to make it look elegant and beautiful as we know them to be.

The cost of this wear is not as expensive as that of the male wear (Agbada) but due to the additional items that are added is what makes it looks expensive it ranges from 7000 naria and above depending on the quality of the fabrics and also the stylist. The stylist also depend on the price of a wear due to what he/she is known for there's a stylist and brand called YOMI CASUAL ,which is mostly patronise by politicians, celebrities and other influential people in the country.

I mention @mahyulmaulana, @itikna09 and @sailawana for this contest

Though the durability of women wear is very slim due to the way the style their cloth and also their walk but if it is worn once in a while it might have a long durability but if not the percentage of the durability is very slim. Also, most of them just wear them occasionally but if it is the fabrics durability is very long especially if it is made from aso-oke

IMG_6325.jpeg

Most of the Yoruba wear are mostly welcome in other African as we are all one but other countries like UK, USA,Canada and other neighbouring countries allow it as most Nigerian has been dominating their country but its mostly worn occasionally because even If its has also been studied that most Nigerian don't flaunt their traditional wears very well even in Nigeria talk less in other countries.

There is no much similarities between our local wears and other parts of the world except our neighbouring countries like Benin,Ghana,Cameroon and others
One of where you can see these traditional wears in case you are looking for is ABIOLA ASO OKE it has been in existence since 1987.

Also, there was a movie that also promoted the Yoruba traditional wears is thereecent KUNLEAFOLAYAN'S film titled ANIKULAPO not only did they promote it but also made the audience known about a cloth called ASO -OFI.
