kainji national park

The Kainji Lake, Nigeria’s first National Park, is located in the norther part of Nigeria. It was established in 1976 and is the oldest in Nigeria.
It includes Kainji Lake (a reservoir) which was formed by the building of the Kainji Dam in 1968 (supplies electricity to better part of Nigeria). Sadly Only the western sector of the national park (i.e. west of the lake) is currently open to visitors.
The park is located in Niger state the largest state in Nigeria and it lays between latitude 9°40’N and 10°30’N and longitude 3°30’E and 5°50’E .
The climate conditions experienced here are usually within the range of wet al from April to November and November to April dry season. The mean annual rain fall is 1100mm to 1200mm for approximately 200 day.
The climatic conditions are quite friendly and easy for visitors and tourists..
The park is a must visit , the only short term problem with the park is the present political and distability of the environment which has led to the closure of most of the park. Presently only the western region are opened for visitors.

Flora.

Flora this is a fancy way to reference the plant population of a particular habitat
The area consists of a variety of wild plants it is also called the savanna woodland of the borgu sector.
They also exist three main rivers on the park namely, Oli Menei, Doro and Manyara Rivers and they both support the continuous existence of the flora life system in the park.
The flora species are some of the jewels of Nigeria
Such as Burkea africana, Terminalia avicennioides and Detarium microcarpum further down the hillside on the relatively dry lower slopes you could see stands of Diospyros mespiliformis (jackbary trees). Amongst others if your a lover of flora this is a must for you to visit and you should seriously consider it

Fauna

The term fauna refers to animal population in a particular habitat. Looking at Nigeria you would be amazed at the vast diversity of animals you could find in Nigeria. though Nigeria is not a popular wild life destination it does house quite a vast number of species of animals some which are native to Nigeria alone.
You will find some of this native animals in the Kainji national park.
They are 65 mammal species, 350 species of birds, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians have been recorded in the park.
Amongst the many animals include include lion, leopard, caracal, elephant and African manatee, numerous species of antelope, hippopotamus, African wild dog, honey badger, cheetah, many species of monkey, and African clawless otter, red flanked duiker, warthog, mongoose, stone partridge, snake head, Bee eaters, hartebeest, turtles, manatees, baboons, ape, Ducker, Reptiles include the Nile crocodile, West African slender-snouted crocodile, four turtle species, Nile monitor amongst many others.

Conclusion.

Being a lover of nature and historical places I have always been fascinated about the kainji park in Nigeria. I first got intrigued when I heard it was the first national park in Nigeria. After hearing this it's just been a matter of when. I hope that after my university I would take a break to visit the kainji park. Peharps with my unlimited budget lol.
Onces more I greaful for the organizers of this contest for giving me an avenue to share to voice out my opinions. There is nothing better than a safe space.
