NASA has unveiled its prototype for a lunar spacesuit for astronauts to work at the south pole of the moon.

The suit designed by the Private company Axiom Space will be used during the first landing of people on the moon under the Artemis program.

NASA's Artemis program, which provides for the return of astronauts to the lunar surface and lunar orbit, requires the creation of new spacesuits.

Those new suits will be more advanced than the spacesuits currently used for spacewalks and the Apollo lunar spacesuits.

Their development has been going on for several years and was one of the reasons for the delay in the first landing on the moon as part of the Artemis-3 flight.

That mission is now scheduled for 2025.

NEW SUITS
In the middle of last year, NASA signed contracts for the development of lunar space suits with two private companies: Axiom Space and Collins Aerospace.

In the autumn of the same year, the agency decided that the lunar spacesuits for Artemis-3 would be created by Axiom Space.

On March 15, Axiom Space presented a prototype of its AxEMU (Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit) lunar spacesuit at a press conference.

It is more agile than previous NASA suits and is suitable for both men and women.

The prototype shown is incomplete, as it lacks the outer white layer made from Mylar and Kevlar.

The suit is equipped with several searchlights and thermal insulation to function in the conditions of the lunar shadow in the region of the south pole of the moon.

In the near future, NASA, together with Axiom Space, will test the spacesuit at the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory at the Johnson Space Center in Houston.
