Isaiah 64:4 (NIV)

Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who acts on behalf of those who wait for him.

For a believer, waiting on God is a lifelong thing. As long as you live and breathe, you will always have reasons to wait on God. God dealt with the Israelites in so many ways for them to understand the importance of waiting on Him. As many miracles He did for them, they still went back to their old ways and didn't learn to wait on God. This was evident when Moses went to receive the scroll from God and he didn't come back in time, they begged Aaron to make an idol for them to worship and they even said that idol was what brought them out of Egypt.

The most beautiful things that you enjoyed in life were not the things you laboured for. God brought you into them and that's why when God is working, we need to learn how to wait. God's timing is always the best. Just when they thought Jesus came late for Lazarus they didn't know it was all in the agenda of God.

God works uniquely for those who wait on Him. His perfect works are revealed to those who wait for Him. You must learn to wait if you want to have the best of God.

God's competence is our guarantee. We wait on Him because we know He is capable. God cannot fail and that's why we need to trust Him and wait on Him. In waiting and having our expectations set on God, God is working behind the scene. There is a common Grace and there is a special Grace. God allows His rain and sun to shine on those who love Him and those who don't (common Grace) but there is a special Grace given to those who walk in the path of God and those who have special expectations of God.

Waiting on God is not telling God how He must act or what He must do but it is seeking to know what God has purposed in His mind to do. It is seeking God. We don't pray in order to change the will of God but to bring our will under the subjection of His will. It is more effective to wait on God to know what His plans are.

How Do We Wait On God?

1. Pray:

You must have a constant time of prayer. You cannot be waiting on God without praying. Prayer is an expression that you have hope in God. Prayer is a demonstration of waiting on God. We need to have a regular time of prayer.

Philippians 4:6 (NIV)

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

2. Rest:

It is a state where you have decided not to be anxious for anything because you have already committed it into God's hands. It's an expression of absolute trust in God and being ready to act when God says 'go'. This state of rest doesn't mean you don't have to do anything, it only means you won't allow worry get the best of you.

3. Act:

You cannot say you are waiting on God without doing something about what you are waiting on God for.

We have a part to act. The horse is made ready for battle but victory belongs to God. You are expected to put things in place and not leave things to chance. Keep calling on God but you must keep rowing to the shore. God will always do His part but you have your own part to play as well.

Prayer has process. You have to act. You can't keep asking God for something without taking steps. It is the steps you take that God will order. When God is working, it doesn't mean you have to be sleeping. Waiting on God is not just about fasting, it runs deeper to us trusting Him and fasting can be one of the ways to do that.
