I dreamed about becoming a lawyer.
When I was in college, it was my fantasy to study law and fight against bad people in the courtroom.
It was a strange thing for a science student to pursue law, but Heart wants what it wants.

I took this decision after getting inspired by fictional characters who were lawyers in a book named Namal. It was a book based on laws and ordinances in Pakistan.
I imagined myself giving arguments for a trial in front of the judge with full confidence.
I was determined and started looking for law institutes in my city. They were giving admission after taking an exam and not based on my emotions that I would become a good lawyer to end Malpractice one day.
If only had I known that it comes with many more conditions, I would have never dreamed about it.
There was another reason for becoming one and it was to never allow any lawyer to exploit my family again.
Let me share a very unfortunate incident that happened during my college days.
It was a case, a real case to fight for, I will not go into the details and embarrass myself. Only this, police and judges used to say that:
This is one of the most peculiar and funny cases ever came in the history of our court and city
And the case was for a living thing walking on four legs.
How do Brown families fight this low?
They didn't use social media back then otherwise they would fight in a WhatsApp family group instead.
Anyhow, we needed a lawyer to fight that case on our behalf. And guess what? We already had lawyers in our extended family.
He was too polite to take any fees and assured us that he would go to the very end to teach the prosecution a lesson, we were defenders.
He became our savior, a saint he was, an angel more appropriately.
The men of our family started inviting him to family dinners, he was not suitable to sit in the drawing room, instead, his rank got higher now to sit in the living room with our family.
Our women were busy in the kitchen making dishes in the scorching heat of summer to flatten him.
The men made sure to make him sit on a throne, only if we had any.
We also attended his wedding as if he were our son and brother. He joined our family functions and parties as if he were a mehram like a brother.
How nice? he must have done exceptional work to defend us in return, right?
But but but
Just like getting a free prescription and check-up from a family doctor doesn't cure your illness.
Lawyers with free advice will not get you any justice.
Because the only thing that can bring out their professionalism is when you put money on the table.
Our lawyer sucked the money outta us from other means but never took any fees. Because of family terms, how hypocritical.
He enjoyed the privilege of being a VIP in our family.
We gave him so much respect, which he couldn't digest and he showed his true colors.
From day one, he wasn't loyal with us, he had sympathies for the other party who was playing the woman card.
He was playing dual games.
He didn't share true details of our case with us and never filed a right petition in the court on our behalf and kept on delaying the case.
It seemed as if he had taken revenge on us.

It enraged all the family and we finally sat down and noticed the moments when some relatives warned us about him.
There is a saying:
When anyone becomes a lawyer, the devil says, our child has been born.
We had no option but to fire him (not with the gun but in that case, the former option was tempting though).
It was the time we realized not to take professional help from any family member again.
They know your weaknesses and use them against you.
It was the time I realized if any of us were a lawyer we could fight for our rights without anyone daring to malpractice.
Was my dream fulfilled?
Well, the fee structure of the institute was way too much than I imagined. The points were raised, if you are interested in practicing law afterward then take admission otherwise forget about it.
People curse lawyers all the time in Pakistan and it also holds back women from pursuing this profession.
My friend told me:
Lawyers should speak with full confidence even when they are stating false information. You should be good at lying.
The last condition knocked me out.
A good lawyer completes their arguments without crying in a courtroom full of men.

Is crying wrong?
How are you supposed to not cry when an opponent shouts at you or talks harshly?
They must normalize it for female lawyers to shed tears in the courtroom.
They finally said:
There is no place for emotions in the courtroom, You just have to get angry and bark at the top of your pitch, when you are losing, to overshadow others.
That was the time, My Lord, when I forgot about this dream of ending malpractice in this world.

In the USA, it was Arabella Mansfield - the first female lawyer to be admitted to the bar in 1869. In Germany, it was Maria Otto who was the first female lawyer to be allowed to practise from 1922. There is also such a "first" in Pakistan: Asma Jilani Jahangir - who was the first woman to set up a law practice in 1952... These pioneers are needed, but so are the successors who follow in their footsteps.
I'm glad you know our legend who had secured 12 awards.
I'm afraid that we don't see any prominent activist who is following her in today's pakistan.
I have never seen any woman besides late Asma and our ex prime minister Benazir Bhutto speaking like a pro, with grace and conviction, in Pakistan

That's a real shame - I was hoping you'd report on some current hopefuls... I wonder. There are brilliant ladies here in the Pakistani community. They definitely live their equality on a small scale. Society as a whole should follow suit. You citizens have to negotiate with each other how this will be organised; we can hardly advise or even demand from the outside. But standing still (for decades) is unsatisfactory...
Or i must say one has to die to become a legend.
Well, we have Muniba Mazari,Mahnoor baloch, their journies are exceptional....
One is the national ambassador for UN and the other one demands the rights for her people who have abducted by forces just because they are considered inferior than other provinces.
When you Google female activists in Pakistan, majority of them were assassinated or attempted.
It's your life or you cause
If this happens, i swear pakistan will become a nation. Currently, we are divided into sects(religious as well as political, both are damaging), and have sympathies for one political party that people start worshipping them.
Lawyers and judges who are supposed to bring justice are no exception.
But it's the people who are divided and wicked and unfortunately one can't bring any change except for himself.
No one is on one page currently.
And you WILL become a vehicle for change! Kudos!
Thank God, you didn't become a lawyer otherwise we would miss a great narrator. Honestly, these so-called lawyers are no less than imps if not full Devils. They will do anything to earn money and show as if they're doing their best.

If i had become one, i would leave it just like my father's cousin who was too naive to become half/full devil unlike all lawyers. Still people make fun of him as a man who couldn't do it:(
