My Played Video Games Review: Bomberman for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)

Bomberman is an arcade-style maze-based video game ported for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). It was developed by Hudson Soft and released in 1985.

Bomberman's simple and fun gameplay style has made it very popular. It was ported to other game consoles and spawned so many sequels. You'll be considered a fake ass video gamer if you did not recognize the name.

The Story

Bomberman is a robot bomb maker. His kind works in a deep underground complex on Earth. Bomberman wants to escape to the surface to become human like another one of his kind who he has heard accomplished it.

Alerted of his attempt, many enemies were sent out in pursuit. Bomberman can only rely on his bomb-making abilities for defense.

Once out there on the surface, will he really become human?

The Graphics and Sound

The graphics are really only fair for being an early NES game. The hero Bomberman seems tiny and he just doesn't look right. The enemies are familiar-looking and don't look bad.

Sound effects used for explosions are great. However, that's the only sound effect in the game besides the noise of Bomberman walking around. The music is limited and not memorable enough.

The Gameplay

The game is easy to learn in a minute.

In Bomberman, your goal is to destroy your enemies by setting up bombs and find the hidden gateway to the next level. The bombs are quite useless and are tricky to use unless you got a detonator. The time limit per level makes you do things at a fast pace and is a bit difficult. There are power-ups to discover but they don't help much. Destroying the various enemies with bombs is kind of fun.

Bomberman has so many levels for you to finish. The game is full of little strategy elements that make it quite fun and unique.

The controls are easy to do and nicely responsive. But the lack of 2 player mode hurts it as it is the first game of the series.

My Verdict

Bomberman is so worthy of your retro gaming time. Its a nice addition to any gamers' collection no matter how old you are based on the fact that the puzzles are smart and the action is fun. It is unarguably considered to be a true gaming classic.

Go get a NES, or go cheap the emulators way on desktop or mobile android. Go have some fun playing it!
