The fatherless Hamid first stayed in the shelter of his uncle Ibrahim for some time. At that time Nasir Uddin Bogdadi, an Iraqi scholar and preacher, came to Sirajganj. Hamid spent some time in his shelter. Then in 1893, shortly before the First World War, he went to the house of Shamsuddin Ahmed Chowdhury, the zamindar of Panchbibi upazila in Joypurhat district. There he worked as a madrasa madrasa and took charge of teaching the zamindar's children. In 1897 he went to Assam with Pir Syed Nasiruddin. He joined the movement in 1903. He went to Deoband in 1908 for the purpose of Islamic education. In 1925 he married Alema Khatun, daughter of Shamsuddin Mohammad Chowdhury, zamindar of Panchbibi upazila in Joypurhat. He moved to Assam with his wife Alema Khatun in 1926 and started the first peasant-tenant movement in Assam. In 1938, Maulana Bhasani left the Congress and joined the Muslim League. At that time, when the 'line system' was introduced in Assam, he led the movement against this oppressive system. He was arrested for cooperating in the state language movement and was tortured for 18 months.

However, Maulana Bhasani was released from prison on 21 April 1953 under the pressure of public opinion. When martial law was imposed, Ayub Khan came to power and banned the activities of all political parties. Maulana Bhasani was arrested from Kumudini Hospital on 12 October.
