Celtic fairies, Chinese dragons and other mysterious creatures

in #history6 years ago

What do fairies, unicorns, dragons and mermaids have in common? Well, of course, these are all mythical creatures found in many folk tales. Moreover, these are all beings that can be considered to dwell on the border between gods and people or between good and evil. Mythology is mainly associated with divine beings, usually called gods and goddesses. There are demigods, such as Hercules, whose father was Zeus and the mother-man. Monotheistic religions later replaced many gods with one God.

But, interestingly, in places where belief in creatures such as fairies was strong, for example, in Ireland, a new religion did not reduce this belief. Fairies often belonged to a kind of intermediate status, not entirely good, but not evil, like demons. Many other supernatural beings have a terrible aspect. For example, ghosts, zombies, demons and vampires are popular stories for horror films. They are united by the fact that people are afraid of them. On the other hand, a small nation, as sometimes called fairies, is not always positive. They can steal children or take them to other worlds. But for the most part fairies give people positive emotions.

Dragons are another interesting kind of mythical creature with a vivid history. In European fairy tales, the dragon was usually a terrible and evil creature. Knights could demonstrate their courage by killing one of these monsters. On the other hand, the Chinese dragons were viewed in a much more positive light. Despite the fact that the dragon in ancient China was still frightening, he was a royal symbol of power. In the Chinese zodiac there is even a sign of a dragon, and people born in the years of the dragon are highly respected. Today many people in the West once again discover the positive attributes of dragons. Their popularity, perhaps, competes only with fairies. Dragons are beginning to be seen as a protective symbol. There are other magical creatures that are classified as good or bad.

Mermaids deserve attention, as they were told about so many stories. Mermaids are exciting creatures that can, like fairies, be dangerous, especially for those who fall in love with them! As for unicorns, they are probably the most benevolent of magical creatures. I can not remember the story of the evil unicorn.

Unicorns seem more ephemeral than anything else. They simply appear in stories without any description of their origin. All these magical beings do not lose their popularity. Over the centuries they can change, acquire different traits, they seem to be embedded in our consciousness. Some will say that these are all fairy tales, they should not be taken seriously in our time. But perhaps now they are especially needed to balance the situation and remind us that not everything can be rationally explained.
