ALTAMURA - CITY OF BREAD

 

Altamura (highwall) is a town in PUGLIA, a region of southern ITALY,
of 70000 inhabitants, famous all over the world for BREAD. 

historical data:

Dinosaur footprints dating back to the Cretaceous have been found,
therefore around 80 million years ago, with its 30000 footprints it is  the largest field in Europe, these footprints have established that at that time the waterhole was full of the sea and the dinosaurs traveled this muddy terrain.
the tracks vary from a size of 5 cm to a maximum of 40 cm, all belonging to species of herbivores,
thus formulating the hypothesis of the presence of a considerable vegetation discovered in the nineties,

 "the man of altamura" is a skeleton of a homo of nearderthal lived in the middle - lower palaeolithic from 120000 and 180000 years ago, the discovery of the remains of this hominid,
completely random, it was of considerable historical importance as it rewrote what evolution was
of the passage from the homo erectus and the homo of neardethal. these remains
they were found in a cave and still today they can not be extracted from the place of discovery because of the limestone that made the skeleton a one with the rock 

the first settlements date back to the seventh century BC of a population called Peucedi, whom they called
the city ALTILIA, which remains are still present in more points of the city 

the megalithic walls stretched for about 4/5 km with a height of about 6 meters surrounding the city.
date back to the third century BC and still there are only some remains clearly visible 

in Roman times there passed a consular artery very imoportante, the Via Appia, which from Rome led to Brindisi,
and across the sea to the east 

during the Middle Ages, in 1232 the Emperor Frederick II of Swabia, in return from the Crusades, had a cathedral built
in honor of the Virgin Mary, and to Frederick II is dedicated every year a medieval festival that involves the whole city, attracting tourists from all over the world
