Reconstruction of famous battle in Zagorje

In Zagorje (northern part of Croatia) this weekend the famous battle was revived...Seljačka buna (Peasant rebellion) took a role in 1573. when peasants refused to pay unfair taxes and than gentry send armed mercenary. In the end they lost the bettle, but still this rebellion is a symbol of the brave fight against injustice.

Matija Gubec was a peasants leader and Franjo Tahi was one of the nobles ready to make a slaughter. Peasants wanted to break the feudal order, to abolish the rule of the nobility and fight for an independent peasant state. They did not succeed and eventually they were cruelly killed.

Heavy weather conditions, snow and mud, poor armaments and a bloody fight against injustice are a faithful reconstruction of what happened in the 16th century at Donja Stubica. The place where the battle was played is called Majsecov mlin (Majsec mill).

Marking a historic battle was initiated by one of the Association in Zagorje ten years ago, and they didn't even expect that it would develop into such a manifestation. More than a ten thousand people not only from Croatia but Hungary, Slovenija and Slovakia also took part. There were 300 statists in the battle.

Like I said at the beginning, Peasant revolt marks an important social struggle of the Croatian people against injustice, and unfortunately it still continues.
