Brief History of the Apothecary

in #history7 years ago

History and archeology tell us the "art of healing" began many thousands of years ago. Tribal healers began creating potions made from plants and animal parts. It is believed the apothecary became popular first in Babylon and later flourished in Spain sometime during the 11th century.

Initially the apothecary used dried herbs and spices for their healing attributes gradually offering general medical advice and eventually, performing a variety of healing related services. Some worked on a barter system while others took payment in coin. Apothecaries were pharmacist, chemist, herbalist, midwife and caregiver all rolled into one. Keep in mind medicine has always been referred to as a practice.

Apothecaries began spreading to the western world taking a firm foothold in London during the medieval period. In those days most businesses in London were members of a guild, much like the unions of today with similar functions. The most powerful original guild in Old England was the "Livery Guild" from which many smaller specialized guilds emerged.

Apothecaries were first members of the "Guild of Pepperers" before later joining the Grocer’s Company in 1345. The company was responsible for maintaining standards for the purity of spices and the setting of weights and measures.

By the mid-sixteenth century apothecaries had become the equivalent of today's pharmacists, dealing mainly with the preparation and sale of substances for medicinal purposes. The presiding authority was the duty of the College of Physicians. They were the law of the land on all issues pertaining to medicine and medical practices.

Apothecaries were finally granted a Royal Charter in 1617 and formed the "Worshipful Society of Apothecaries." Notice there is a obvious Masonic tone existing in the charter's organizational title. The society became so powerful after its formation the members were able to challenge the prestigious College of Surgeons.

The "Worshipful Society of Apothecaries" went on to establish the Chelsea Physic Garden one of the oldest and continuously operational botanical gardens in Europe. The original purpose of the gardens was for training apprentices in the identification and use of medicinal plants. It has greatly expanded since it's inception along the backs of the river Thames.

In 1815 Parliament passed the Apothecaries Act which granted the society great powers to both license and regulate practitioners of medicine throughout all of England.

Today, the Society grants diplomas in areas such as Medical Jurisprudence, Medical History, and Medical Philosophy. Following the advent of the Forensic Medical Sciences the society later added diplomas that include Forensic and Clinical Aspects of Sexual Assault, HIV Medicine and Medical Care of Catastrophes.

Eight hundred sixty seven years is a long time to have survived prolonged wars, devastating plagues and famines. Secure in its place in history the "Society of Apothecaries" continues to further the education and licensing of British medical practitioners .

Most interesting article.

When you mentioned the Guild of Pepperers it made me of Nicholas Culpeper who wrote the Complete Herbal, but he was three centuries later.

Thanks pennsif for coming by. The history of England is fascinating!🐓

Nicholas Culpeper was one of my schoolfriends :) All the same, when I read this post I also was reminded of steemit's very succesful @papa-pepper! (That's what steemit does to me...)

😊

Some interesting material you are posting and resteeming @healingherb - now followed.

Thank you @pennsif. I checked your channel out. I just read that very poignant piece about your mum. Hope it's OK to mention it but that's a theme in our house today -almost identical. Followed.

Thank you.

My son is a pharmacy tech, he's studying to be a pathologist (after switching his bioengineering major lol) I always find medicine and it's history amazing, I am a kitchen witch of sorts. :)

Oh that's exciting, I once applied for a position working in a pathology lab at the university. That would be so interesting. Good for him. Kitchen witch of sorts. Picturing you in the kitchen with your book of spells casting them at just the right time!😉

I imagine the human body to be fascinating in every stage! Oh so you didn't get to work there? I worked at a mortuary as a hostess when I was a teenager. Perfect place to do homework!
No spell casting for me but lots of medicinal shenanigans going on lol

What an interesting article - amazing how the professions developed from guilds. That potential Masonic angle is fascinating. It makes sense some Masons would have gone into "apothecaring". If I have my timelines right, when pharmacists were developing actual medical skills, blacksmiths were surgeons and dentists because at least they had the tools for the job. Fascinating how doctors are now on a pedestal and many pharmacists have lost their connections to their herbal roots...thanks as always for an interesting and thought-provoking post 😊😊

Thank you so much for reading and your eloquent comments. You know your history and caught my reference to the masons. They seemed to be everywhere and into all facets of society, they fascinate me. Secret societies and their rituals🐓🐓

I really enjoyed your post - one of those thought-provoking gems you have a tendency to produce. 😊😊

There are so many conspiracy theories around the Masons, but these days I think many of the Masonic houses are just looking to be good citizens. I'm thinking of a childhood friend who is now an air traffic controller by profession, a clown (red nose, floppy shoes and all) as a volunteer and a Mason. He sometimes posts informative snippets about the Masons on FB, which belies their image as a super secret society who would kill any of their own who dare to reveal anything about the group. I'd love to see him post on Steemit as he's doing his own little bit to make the world 🌎 a better place....😊😊

The Masons have a deep rooted convoluted history. I am with you thinking that most are just trying to make the world a better place. Fun to speculate. Your friend definately needs to come to steemit. We could use another good deed doer. Are you starting to get back to your life again? I am at the end of a long run at work, feeling a little crispy around the edges. Brain power minimum. Will get better after today . Catch up to you then. Your friend. Ellie Mae🐓🐓

May you decrisp in peace, my friend. 🌻🌻See you soon. 😊😊

@mother2chicks This is an awesome post, very interesting and well researched with beautiful illustrations. Upvoted and resteemed :)

Thank you so much for your kind words. I enjoyed writing it, always fascinated with all matters of medical matters 🐓Thank you for resteeming❣️

A very interesting article. I love history

Thanks for stopping by, I love history particularly medieval🐓
