History of Khulna University:
In 1974. In the report of the Kudrat-i-Khuda Education Commission, a university was established to recommend a university in Khulna division. On 10 November, 1979, the government cabinet decided to set up a university in Khulna. University Grants Commission Ordinance 5 (1) In 1983, a proposal was submitted to the government to set up a university in the department of Mathematical section.

The final decision was taken to set up the university of Khulna on 16 December 1986. The final decision was made to establish the Khulna University in the year 4 of G7. In 1987, the then President Hussein Muhammad Ershad laid the foundation stone of Khulna University. On 1 August, 1989, Professor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology Golam Rahman was appointed as the first project director of this university and later as the university's first vice-chancellor.
