In the UK the A/C were adapted to carry 8 x 20lb [9.07 kg] bombs under wings,
If the invasion of England over the English Channel occurred there was over
500 Tiger Moths ready to attack the landing craft.
In the Far East, the Tiger Moth was further modified to be able to carry a
Stretcher, as an Air Ambulance role.

Disappeared, pilot Mr James Taylor took off on a
Solo local flight from Mangere and flew in a South
Westerly direction, bad weather set in shortly after. 1625 on 28 Apr 1949

Missing – Chris Rudge –

Mr. James Innes Taylor, age 20, with 11 hrs dual, 6 hrs solo, with his PPL at 1645 hrs on 8 Apr 1949.

Departed Mangere airfield in good weather conditions, when he had not returned by 1740 hrs,
the club became concerned even though the A/C was fitted with night flying instruments.

At first light four aero club A/C and two C47,[DC3s] of 41 Sqn, a Catalina of 5 Sqn and a
Harvard were given a sector to search.

The area extended from Whangaparaoa Peninsula, across to the northern point of Coromandel Peninsula
down to Waihi and over to Raglan, the search was finally given up on 9 May.

Mr. P Brays picked up an interplane strut at Kaiiotahi Gap at 1430 hrs on 10 Jul 1949 and handed it into the
police at Waiuku,

Although not positively identified as coming from ZK - AIS, given the colour it was painted
there was a high probability that it was,

No other trace has been found

Pilot John Dennis Tacon, hired the A/C from Hawkes Bay and East Coast Aero Club, it was painted bright yellow.

Departed Hastings at 0800 hrs with 3 hours of fuel on board, bound for Taupo approx 1 hour away, the normal route was to follow the Napier – Taupo road over hilly farmland for half the distance.

Then through an area of thick bush and scrub where there were numerous gorges and ravines, this was where the road followed the Waipunga River east of the Ahimanawa range.

The last third was over a relatively open plain.

When the A/C failed to arrive RNZAF flying control set up a search H Q in Taupo.

Weather permitting the area was searched by many A/C both service and civilian including Catalina, Harvards,
Beechcraft, Miles Whitney Straight, Desoutter, Tiger Moths, Proctor, and Waco,

The air search was called off on Sun 15 June

I recently watched a Canadian aircraft documentary that mentioned that plane. They reported it was quite a handful for pilots to keep under control, and taught new pilots how to manage a squirrely machine.

They were a great machine to learn to fly in, fully aerobatic +9 to -3G.
From them, the air force pilots went onto the Harvard / Texan T6, it had more things to worry about, like remembering to put the wheels down.
If a strong enough wind they could be flown backwards,
At one of the training bases when the wind got too strong, they would approach the hanger, reduce the engine power until it was sitting stationary, the troops would run out, grab a handful of wing or tail, and when they were ready the pilot would cut the engine and the troops would carry it into the hanger.
The glue that held the wooden main spar started to let go after about 35 to 40 years so to get a new Cert Of Aviation they had to replace the main spars, not a cheap job. This grounded a lot of them.
