Wild Bill Hickok: The Springfield Square IncidentsteemCreated with Sketch.

in #history6 years ago (edited)

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

I've been talking about the life and adventures of Wild Bill Hickok
out in the Western territories of the United States.

My last post left off with him serving in the Army as a scout and spy in
which he had many purported adventures but few with corroborating
accounts or witnesses except the one of him crossing the river under
enemy gunfire so I'm not going to go into those as they may be
just tall tales.

We do know when he was released from is military duty in 1865 and
we know that his last official assignment was to ride out and give a
wagon train the news the the Civil War was over and we have a
description of him doing that by one of the men on the train:

"When about a half mile from the fort Wild Bill, on a dandy horse,
came riding by on a run, shouting as he rode by "Lee's surrendered!
Lee's surrendered!"

He was a striking figure as I noticed him, a large broad-brimmed at
on his head, long drooping mustache, long flowing hair that fell about
his shoulders, a brace of ivory-handled revolvers strapped to his
waist, and an extra pair in holsters that fitted about the horn of his
saddle where he could reach them instantly.

These latter were long barreled ones, capable of carrying quite a
distance. It was common talk that he had got many an enemy with
them just on account of their long-range qualities."

Apparently they didn't have much of a dress code in the Army back
then.

This was Wild Bill's last official assignment in the Army and was
released shortly after, I read a copy of his discharge papers dated June
10th, 1865.

This was in Springfield, Missouri and that's where he stayed for
awhile. It was still a pretty wild place to be at the time, not very
civilized with quite a few rough men hanging out there.

One well known reporter said this about Springfield:

"It's strange, half civilized people who, from all the country round,
make this a place of barter and trade. They wear buckskin pants and
homespun; they were dirty and lazy. Their most marked
characteristic was in indisposition to move, and their highest
ambition to let their hair and beard grow.

The only indication of action was the inevitable revolver which every
body, excepting perhaps, the women, wore about their persons."

Sounds like a lovely place to live doesn't it? lol. This wasn't the
Western edge of expansion but it sure sounds like one.

Things heat up with an old enemy...

Springfield was the city where Wild Bill was stationed during the war
and lived there off and on as duty allowed, much of his time being
away behind enemy lines. But of course he did have people who he
wasn't fond of and who didn't like him as well.

One of those men was named Dave Tutt and they had known each
other for years and not in a cheerful way, they had bad feelings that
had brewed for a long time. Friends of their's say that Tutt started
seeing a girl that Wild Bill had liked and that didn't set well with Bill.

So Wild Bill then started seeing one of Tutt's sisters to get even with
him. The story is that the sister got pregnant and had a son. Well Tutt
was of course furious and swore revenge on Wild Bill. Back then this
was quite a controversial situation and stigma to be pregnant with no
husband. I'm not sure what the circumstances were but I think Wild
Bill was away in the Army and Tutt's sister left and went back East.

Friends of Tutt also claim that Tutt accused Wild Bill of killing one of
Tutt's Confederate friends during the war.

Now come's the time after the war and Tutt is living in Springfield and
is known to be a Southern sympathizer which of course is disgusting
to Wild Bill. And Tutt hates Wild Bill for being a womanizer to his
sister and being a damn Yankee. Plus they are both gamblers, heavy
drinkers and everyone is allowed to wear their pistols as there are no
gun laws in place.

Gee, I wonder what could possibly happen next?

The watch incident...

Well, they were playing cards in a saloon of course. Wild Bill was
winning and collected a hand of $200. Now, I don't know what that
would be in todays dollars but it had to be equal to about $10,000
right? That's a ton of money for back then!

Tutt was angry and reminded Wild Bill that he owed him $40 which
Wild Bill promptly paid to him. Then Tutt told him he still owed
another $35 for another debt but Wild Bill disagreed and said it was
only $25. At this point Tutt reached over and grabbed Wild Bill's
classic gold pocket watch which was lying on the table, one which
Wild Bill cherished.

At this point Wild Bill stood up. Not happy. This was dishonorable to
have an item taken from you especially in public like that.

A friend of his that was there quoted Wild Bill as saying this.

"I don't want ter make a row in this house. It's a decent house, and I
don't want ter injure the keeper. You'd better put that watch back on
the table."

Of course Tutt didn't put it back, he grinned a big grin and walked out.
Tutt had friends there who wanted a fight between the two because
Tutt was known as a crack shot with a pistol and they dared Wild Bill
to go fight him and when Wild Bill didn't they told him that Tutt was
going to cross the town square the next day wearing Wild Bill's watch.

That action would of course be a great humiliation and dishonor to
Wild Bill. Well everyone in town was talking about the situation, it's
probably the most action that had happened there for awhile. A friend
of Wild Bill called Captain went to talk to him the next day and found
him in his room cleaning his revolvers.

"Now Bill, Captain says.." you're goin ter git inter a fight."

"Don't you bother yourself Captain. It's not the first time I have been
in a fight...and these damned hounds have put on me long enough.
You don't want me ter give up my honor do yer?"
"No Bill, yer must keep yer honor."

The next day about noon Wild Bill went down the the square. He said
that Tutt shouldn't pack that watch across the square unless dead men
could walk.

Well, of course here comes Tutt showing up on the square wearing
Wild Bill's watch. Wild Bill warned him not to cross the square but
Tutt laughed him off and started walking, at the same time pulling out
his pistol.

Bill instantly drew both of his and fired at the same time, striking Tutt
in the heart. Captain said as soon as Bill fired he whirled around to
face the group of Tutt's friends who were there to see him die. They
had already drawn their guns.

Wild Bill snarled "Aren't yer satisfied gentlemen? Put up your shootin-
irons or there'll be more dead men here."
They put them up and said it
was a fair fight.

There WAS actually lawmen there but I reckon they were there to
enjoy the show. Wild Bill was arrested and charged with murder and
had to stand trial. But he was released on a $2,000 bail while the trial
was going on. That had to be a fortune back then so he had some
wealthy friends.

The defense presented witnesses which all claimed that Tutt fired first
even though Captain didn't say anything about Tutt firing. But the defense
presented Tutt's pistol with one fired chamber.

One report said that as they walked toward each other they both fired
at the same time so that witnesses couldn't determine who fired first
but Tutt was encumbered with a long linen duster(coat) and his pistol
got caught in it and it is believed he fired before he was ready and
received Wild Bill's balls near his heart. Seemed Lady Luck was
always with Bill.

It was a short trial. Two days. The jury met for ten minutes and
returned a Not Guilty verdict. Another idiot who was full of hate and
was in favor of slavery bit the dust. Justice. Wild Bill acted in self
defense.

so he had a child , I figure he was not around for the child ? as for Springfield I would not to live there , the only Springfield I would like to stay is were the Simpsons are x

hahaha! winchestergirl that was a good one! you should get out there more and connect with more people to grow your account..but only if you want that, I don't know what your goals are and your account IS growing right?
I don't pay attention but I think your rep number is going up?

No Wild Bill I think was off fighting and I think the girl left to go back East.
she got married and later wouldn't admit to anything when she was 50 years old and it's understandable to see why especially back then.

yes I have gone up a number , oh right I thought he might have done the decent thing by her x

yeah right. like you really believe a man would do the right thing! lol.

there are some decent men out there - I hope !!

Hi @janton. What is it with these guys and women. They caused more harm than anyone else it seems. Luck was certainly on his side and I think in those days you needed it. At least you had a day off yesterday and were able to get some research done.

ha! yes luck was a huge part of his success..until it ran out but I'll get to that part. what did you do yesterday instead of steemit? I did some work outside and then worked on research like you said.

oh well thank you sir yehey. It is greatly appreciated and thanks so much for helping so many!

Back then this
was quite a controversial situation and stigma to be pregnant with no
husband. Sounds like Ireland back in the 60's and 70's

howdy sir blanchy! yes sir well by the 70s in the United States it was rather commonplace so alot changed in 100 years.
Hey do you think this post was too long? I try to keep them shorter that this one but since I only had one main incident I didn't want to divide it.

No not at all . I didn’t notice the length which meant it was fine .

thank you sir blanchy, I generally like to have fairly short posts because I don't think people have any patience, is that what you've observed on here?

In fact I was surprised that several people congratulated me for becoming a vegan a couple days ago when I did that post about fake BBQ! hahaha!
so they didn't really read the post either even though it was short.

what's your philosophy or theory on that? being a salesman you have probably studied human behavior more closely than most yes?

I remember last week someone said they couldn't listen to the podcast because it was 20 minutes. Oh wait . That was you! Hahahahahahahah.
I scan over many but read the people I have a relationship with. I sent you 5 SBI again by the way because I'm a sound snowflake!

ha! yeah hey 20 minutes is pushing it with almost everyone, a few might have the time but not many.
what? 5 sbi! ok so now I send you 6 right?
thanks sir blanchy I was wondering who to ask about doing this with, figured you already had people.

Myself and the springbox are doing it but he has other doners from his poor mouth S.B.I post. Everyone felt guilty and gave him a few so now he’s way ahead of me and owes them people shares. So il give you some while he is repaying his debts. You don’t need to give 6 back! 😂😂. You can if you want. Just means il owe you 1. We would both get 6 more shares though so win win really. I don’t do this to get them back

ok sir blanchy..what is " he springbox" and you been slacking on replying to your comments man.
I must have made three comments to you yesterday and nary a word back...really reeks of rank amateurism. lol.

Funny how a $2000 bail could get you off murder back in the day

howdy again empress! Well..glenalbrethsen looked it up for me and he said that $2,000 would be like $31,000 today so he had some real rich friends. Maybe they paid the jury off because the 2 grand didn't get him off but the jury did.

I agree with their verdict though. thanks so much for commenting!

Moral of the story, don't take a man's gold watch! Lady luck sure shone on him. Whatever happened to his son?

howdy there cecicastor! well, that lady took off and had the kid and married someone else and didn't ever admit anything. But of course they didn't interview her until years later when she was 50 years old so I'm sure she was never going to admit anything, that was probably about 1900 by then.

What colorful lives they lived back then. I often wonder what people from that time would think of our society if they were to suddenly find themselves among us. I can't help but think it would feel like a prison to them, as we barely realize the freedoms we've already given away.

You tell a good tale and I thoroughly enjoy reading the writings!

howdy there tamaralovelace! well thank you for your kind words. I think they'd be shocked at all the rules and regulations, like not being able to smoke in a building and how much is taken in taxes. not to mention not being able to go everywhere with your guns on! lol. Thanks so much for reading and commenting!

Wasn't sure on a starting year—you said after the war—so I used 1866 as a starting point. Here are the results:

Screen Shot 2018-09-18 at 4.22.45 PM.png

So, accordingly, not $10,000, but still quite a bit, even by today's standards.

Subsequently, $2,000 bail then would be $31,716.48 now.

howdy sir Glen! lol. thank you, it's so good to have you back..ok so that $200 win was big enough to make people pretty upset, thats like 3 years wages back then because a decent wage was $75 a month, some of his scouting work paid $100 per month so 1,200 per year.

And the bail, my gosh that was a fortune back then so I wonder if the jury was all paid off just to be sure! lol. that was a hefty sum in those days.
This gives a better understanding, now i wish I would have researched it!

I get the idea that's what I'm here for. :)

As for the jury, was there any indication they were bought off? Would either have been convicted of murder for the other's death when there was so much history between them and it was essentially a gunfight of honor?

Now, you could be in jail if you just threatened to shoot someone. Oh, wait, that's only if you're a law abiding citizen who believes in the 2nd amendment. My bad. :)

howdy today sir Glen! hahaha, that last sentence about being thrown in jail is funny but not funnyu at the same time! No there wasn't any hard evidence of jury rigging and I don't think it would have been needed because it was a clear case of self defense like you said, no matter who won.
There were newspaper articles written in favor of both sides though, one claiming that Wild Bill was a saint and the other claiming Tutt was a saint. The researcher said the town was divided, split down the middle because Wild Bill was respected but had alot of enemies because the town itself was split on the issue of slavery. It was noted that Tutt was a confederate soldier and his friends were pro-slavery. So..just one more reason for the feud between the two men.

One thing for sure is that Tutt was overconfident given Wild Bill's reputation.

I'm liking Wild Bill more and more.....!!!
(:
Thank You @janton

howdy there annephilbrick! well thank you, I thought you might like it as his story continues. Thanks so much for reading and commenting!
