Then governor of the State of New York, Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the George Washington Bridge over the Hudson River on this day in 1931. The bridge connects Fort Lee, New Jersey and Washington Heights.

The bridge which is a 4,760 foot long suspension bridge was the longest in the world at the time and was completed 8 months ahead of schedule.

The six-lane George Washington Bridge which was built in sections was constructed in sections and carried by pieces to the construction site by rail, then hauled them into the river by boat, then hoisted them into place by crane.
