Mesjid Teungku di Anjong: One of the oldest mosques in Aceh
The mosque of Teungku di Anjong is one of the oldest mosques in Banda Aceh. A history says the mosque was built in 1769 by Sayyid Abubakar bin Husaien Bilfaqih, a great scholar of Hadramaut, Yemen. He traveled to Southeast Asia and settled in Aceh, ignoring Islam.
This mosque was swept by the tsunami in 2004 ago. But rehab done to make the building stronger
Sayyid Abubakar runs a missionary mission from Aceh. He settled in Peulanggahan, the area used to belong to the Kandang Aceh Complex or the Sultanate of Aceh. Peatanggahan comes from transit words. This village is located in the valley of the River Aceh, a place that often stop by the travelers who crossed the Strait of Malacca first
In addition to religious studies, dayah and mosque is also a center for menasik haji. Prospective pilgrims from different parts of the archipelago and the Malay peninsula, stop by at Peulanggahan to learn how to perform the Hajj before continuing their journey to the Holy Land.
The ships carrying pilgrims through the Straits of Malacca transit and join the hajj pilgrimage for a month, guided Teungku in Anjong. It is said that this is where the origins of Aceh nicknamed the Veranda of Mecca.
