Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact - 80 years ago
Hello,
the photo above marks the history also today.
It was the alliance between two socialist powers, the Soviets and the Nazis. Yes, both have had a socialist background.
We can say that this pact started the WWII, even if the Russians still don't admit it. They have split Europe in two, drawing the borders as they pleased. Russia says it was forced to, but the argument is weak as the Baltic states, Finland, North-East Romania, some part of Poland and some others have not been any threat to the big state to the East.
It was a moment that some expected as the other states with bigger influence like France and England have had their internal issues and could not comment on it. They have been so weak at that time that they declared war only on Germany when both Russia and Germany invaded Poland.
So, back to our pact. Both sides knew that this pact bought them enough time to prepare for the next step. Germany could overrun Western Europe and Russia to calm it's internal struggle.
The pact lasted till Germany was forced to attack Russia with the Operation Barbarossa, because Russia was planing to attack the remain of Romania. Why? Because Romania was the major oil and grain supplier for Germany at that time,and Germany would knew if they would lose Romania, they would lose fast the war because of the two strategic supplies.
For part of my family it was a crucial thing, as following the pact they had a couple of hours to evacuate their homes and flee. My grandfather managed to get right in time out. His brother was 3-4 hours late and got executed by the red army. Nobody cared as the war did not official start.
Today we see some of the history repeating. We see autocratic leaders who do not care about consequences, we see escalations in nuclear arms racing and 20% of Earths lungs burn.
It is our duty not to forget about the misfortunes we bring ourselves in, as they tend to repeat in a cyclic way.
We forget so easily. Your posts are here reminding us of historic moments (including in music not so long ago). Thank you for them, greatly appreciate!
Sadly we do. I see so many people lingering about communism for example, forgetting that most have been held in an animal like state of living.
