THE RUNES
They were the alphabet of the Vikings and the Germanic, Celtic and Saxon peoples of the frozen lands of the Scandinavian peninsula and central Europe. Although a precise date of its origin is not known, the oldest symbols similar to a runaque that the archaeologists found, are marks in caves in the late Bronze Age, around 1300 a.C., especially in Sweden.
But what distinguishes the runes from other alphabets is that they were not only a writing system, but they are attributed a parctical and a sacred use. From its origin they were linked to spirituality, magic, predictions and protection.
The word rune means "murmur" and comes from the word runar, "magic symbol".
FIRST USE OF THE RUNES.
The Runic alphabet became known as FUTHARK, for the union of the names of the first six runes: FEHU, URUZ, THURISAZ, ANSUZ, RAIDO AND KANO.
The oldest runic texts are carved in stone, and make reference to the use and origin of the symbols. Noleby stone, the seventh century.
Runes were the basis of the literary tradition of Northern Europe. Some peoples built, in addition to their prayers, poems known as sagas that described the symbolism of the alphabet and narrated facts where they were shown the power that represented their use.`
