Pogi is a Filipino word for handsome. But not all Filipinos know that this word is a slang word at about year 1950s. The Philippines was colonized by Spain for 333 years. Because of this, some Filipino words are deeply rooted form Spanish words. For example, the word guapo/ guapa in Spanish which means handsome and beautiful respectively are adopted in Filipino as gwapo/gwapa which also means the same things.

Filipinos love reversing the syllables of a word or read/speak a word reversely which resulted to new words like lodi (someone you look up to, reverse of the word idol), erp (male friend, reverse of pre) and the likes.

During the not so old times gwapo was also read in reverse syllables. It resulted to "pogwa". As time goes by the word "pogwa" evolved into "pogi"

Example:

  • Lodi petmalu you look so pogi today erp!
  • You look so pogi in your polo shirt, Charot!
