TDK tarafından "arkadaş ve akraba kayırma" olarak tanımlanan bu kelimenin kökeni bir hayli ilginçtir. Çıkış noktası İtalyanca olan bu kelime, yeğen anlamına gelen "nipote" kelimesinden türetilmiştir ve dönemin İtalya'sında papaların yeğenlerini iyi pozisyonlara getirmeleri üzerine kullanılmaya başlanmıştır. Sözü geçen bu yeğenler ise genellikle papaların gayrimeşru çocuklarıdır.
