Hello my dear Steemians,

Here I wanted to leave a link to the contest by @abdullahw2

What are hormones and what are their functions in the human body?

Hormone are chemical substances that our body produces, they originate from different endocrine glads, the glands are located in different parts of our body and responsible for different functions. Usually the body produces hormones depending on different condition of our body such as:

  • stress and shock, when the hormones should trigger extreme energy in order to save us in such situation

  • when we are growing up from childhood into teenager time our body produces sexual hormones and that forms our body and give sexual characteristic

  • women who are pregnant have huge reconstruction that is happening in the body of a woman that helps the body to accommodate, feed and care about the little embryo that is then growing into a baby during 9 months of pregnancy

  • there is also important hormone that regulates our blood sugar and helps to maintain absorption of nutrients and if there is a disorder there then people may develop diabetes. Sometimes it could be a condition that children are born with but often later in our age people develop diabetes of elderly

Name any three hormones and briefly mention their roles.

  • Thyroid glad hormones

Thyroid glad producing hormones called T3 and T4, the hormone production is controlled by the area of brain called hypothalamus that is producing Thyroid Stimulating hormone (TSH). If the level of hormone is high that means that there is hypoactive thyroid glad but if the level of TSH low that means that thyroid glad produces a lot of hormones.

The symptoms that people develop if there is overactive or underactive thyroid are very much noticeable and usually doctor can immediately guess that there is a problem with thyroid glad.

To give you an idea about one of the easy diagnosing thyroid disease is “Grave’s disease”

This is autoimmune disease when own body produces antibodies that are stimulating uncontrolled production of thyroid hormones and the symptoms are:

  • Bulging eyes, that is one of the recognisable symptom, that happens because of the oedema in the space behind the eyes and that is pushing the eyes forward, making people to have such enlarged and impressively scarred looking eyes

  • The thyroid hormones cause racing heart, people feel palpitation and uncomfortable feeling in chest

  • Another symptom is increased appetite, people can eat a lot but their weight remains the same or sometimes they loose weight

  • many people will feel nervous and anxious

  • diarrhoea is another common symptom of overactive thyroid

  • Insulin

Another hormone that our body need for living, that hormone is produced by pancreas and in some cases people born with diabetes and that is called Type 1: when body produces antibodies and attack insulin producing cells of pancreas, these people will need insulin since they are born and life long.

Type 2 diabetes when body is not able to produce enough Insulin or the cells do not react appropriately to Insulin, that is usually developed later when we get older or sometimes when people are eating too much carbs and high calories.

When people have high level of insulin that brings your blood sugar down and people start to be anxious, shaky, sweaty, tingly fingers, palpitation, dizzy and hungry. If the condition is treated immediately by simply giving sugar people may loose consciousness.

If you have a moment when your blood sugar is too high because it was not enough insulin, people feeling weak and lack of energy. Sometimes people notice that they passing a lot of urine and feeling thirsty. Long term it will damage the peripheral vessels causing ulcers of feet but also redice the sensitivity damaging the nerves.

  • Adrenaline

Adrenalin is another very well known hormone that is produced by adrenal glands we have two of them just above both kidneys. We all know that adrenalin if a stress hormone that is automatically produced by our body when we come across any stress situation, fright, accidents and stress. The situation when people suffer from any type of shocks, like sepsis, bleeding and so on. When our body needs more reserves just to maintain the function of our body and keep us safe for time being till help arrives.

Adrenaline constrict our blood vessels and keep our brain active supplying with blood the main organs. It usually reduces the sensitivity of our body or block nerves so that we do not feel pain and able to continue doing something that will help to save our life. We all experience once the action of adrenaline and we all know how impressive that feeling of joy, that is why there are some who seek for adrenaline shower while doing extreme sports or any activities that trigger of our body to produce adrenaline.

I hope you have learnt a bit about main hormones that our body produces.

I am inviting @theexplorerguy, @vvarishayy, @pathanapsana
