What is biosecurity?

To my understanding, Biosecurity refers to or means the procedures, protocols, or measures used to stop the spread of infectious diseases, including viruses, fungi, parasites, and bacteria, in environments such as laboratories and healthcare. The main purpose of biosecurity is to protect healthcare workers, the community, and patients from biological hazards or any contaminated disease.

Do you know what the most important biosafety standards are that we healthcare workers must follow?

The most important biosafety standards in healthcare include the following:

• The Universal Protections (Standard Precautions): Use personal protective equipment such as masks, gowns, gloves, or eye protection. Also, assuming all blood and body fluids are potentially infectious, it is when healthcare workers can use any of the standard protection.

• Hand Hygiene: Wash your hands with soap and water, or, better still, use alcohol-based sanitizer before and after your contact with the patient.

• Waste management: According to protocol, clean and disinfect surfaces and medical instruments properly. Also, dispose of general waste and infectious waste properly.

Disposable Materials: Single-use items are meant to stop cross-contamination and must be discarded safely after use.

Anti-fluid Material: They help to protect against saliva, blood, or other bodily fluids splashes. Also, special material is designed to resist liquid penetration.

With the biosecurity regulations, we avoid the following:

• Cross contamination and infections among staff and patients

• Environmental contamination

• Exposure to Bloodborne pathogens

• Hospital-acquired infection

• Occupational accidents
