Is self Medication is safe?

Self-medication is the situation where an individual uses drugs to treat different sicknesses they are battling after self diagnosing without discussing it with any health professionals. Self-medication is not safe at all. People who continue using this medication can depend on it, and it can also result in addiction, which is very risky to our health.

Some people can just go to the over-the-counter shop to buy medicine without checking the expiry date. If they consume this medicine, it can put their life in danger, and in some cases, it can result in long-term illnesses. Inaccurate misuse of self-medication does not provide accurate treatment you need because they are less effective and lead to poor health condition.

What kind of self medication do you practice?

Whenever I realized I am having catarrh, cold, body pain, and headache, I usually went to the over-the-counter shop to buy medicine so that it can relieve me from minor sickness that affects my daily activities. If I use these drugs for like 3 days and do not see any positive changes, I will consult a health practitioner for adequate treatment. Sometimes it works for me effectively when I explain to the attendants about the symptoms I am experiencing.

Additionally, I also make use of herbs such as bark, leaves of mango tree, neem, and other herbal ingredients for the treatment of malaria symptoms. This can be done when I cook all of them, after that, I will consume the herb when it ready which can help me to cure the sickness. I believe that some of these herbs are used to produce the drugs we use in our various hospitals.

Do you experience any adverse effect of your self Medication.

I have never experienced any side effects, but I know it's very risky when one engages in self-medication, which can later result in poor health if the drugs are taken in the wrong way. I will make sure to read the leaflet of the medicine to know the dosage I need to consume in order to avoid an overdose of the medicine.

Although it happened to someone that I know, a doctor prescribed drugs for us to buy outside the hospital because the pharmacy in the hospital did not have them. When we purchased the drugs outside, they gave us the wrong ones, which later resulted in serious side effects such as headaches and dizziness. After complaining, we asked her to stop the drugs, which later relieved her from those side effects.

Give some general disadvantages of self Medication.

Using drugs without a doctor's prescription is referred to as self-medication. Some of these drugs are found in supermarkets or the nearest pharmacy in the community. Self-medication is very dangerous to our health because it can continue to worsen our illnesses or sometimes lead to death in both young and old individuals. A person who consumes both drugs and alcohol is in danger because their brains will not be able to function effectively for a long period of time.

Another disadvantage is that some of these drugs react, especially if they are used together with other substances. The potency of the drugs may not be effective, which will later affect our overall well-being.

Self-medication worsens people's health because they believe that they can treat themselves without visiting hospitals. If they engage in these activities, it may affect other vital organs. By the time they want to seek medical attention, it will be late to respond to treatment.
