Walking the Former City Walls of Vienna [Week Two of Six Week Health Challenge]
Imperial Court Theatre
My today’s walk was longer than I planned, one round around the Vienna ring, which is approximately 5.5km, knowing that because I took a couple of runs there in the past.
But I walked 10.8 km today, almost like two rounds with all that little detours to take the pictures.
First I headed to the Nosh Market where I bought my potatoes for my recipe I posted earlier today.
the blue ones and the babies please
Next stop was the Vienna State Opera.
no Tom Cruise movie, so no road blocks and bystanders today
Then I arived at the Stadtpark with a total surface area of 65,000 square metres.
Being a popular site of entertainment in front of the city gates already in the Biedermeier time, it was turned into a park in the style of English gardens, when the city walls were demolished and the Vienna ring street, the one I’m walking today, was created in its place.

Many composers are admired here like Johann Strauss I
famous Austrian romantic composer
and Franz Lehár.
Austro-Hungarian composer known for his operetta The Merry Widow
In between is the Kursalon, a music hall designed by Johann Garben in the style of the Italian Renaissance and built between 1865 and 1867.
back in my time I used to visit a couple of house parties here
Then I headed to the Urania. As a child I wached Kasperl and Pezi there, a puppet theater show about a punchinello and a sweet bear. You can also observe the stars here.
public educational institute and observatory
At Schottenring I passed the Ring tower, a 20m
High weather beacon on the roof signals the conditions.
red raising: temperature raising
red falling : temperature falling
green raising: weather situation improves
green falling: weather situation worsens
green steady: weather situation steady
red blinking: warning thunder or storm
white blinking: snow or black ice
yeah I figured that by myself
Next stop was the University of Vienna where I studied 2 semesters of commercial informatics before joining the Armed Forces and abandoning this career path.
founded by Duke Rudolph IV in 1365
Then further to the Town hall. Maybe at the weekend I go ice-skating there but for today it is just pictures.
Town hall
I remember when the ice rink was maybe 1/3 of the size today.
all that wrapping must be a nice job
A couple of steps and there is the Parliament which is in renovation at the moment, all the workers are relocated in temporary buildings in the park in front of the Hofburg, which will be dismantled when finished.
as close as I could get
The Hofburg for the finish, because I survived the cold and had energy left, while my phone didn’t.
As a scholar I was there at the technological ball, but not at the first which was in the year 1900.
It even served as an orthopedic hospital for 11 years once, before being relocated.
Austrias largest library is located here
Hope you enjoyed my little tour of 2.5 hours.
Until next time,
Miron

falling in love with Vienna right now! Brilliant entry!
Thank you, you really would love it here! Vienna is quite popular among Chinese people now, 34% more overnight stays last year.
a city so full of beauty and history...
True to that, a diverse and traditionaly cross-cultural fine city.
A temple for a hospital: my kind of healing location!
Confused by your ever poor weather:
red or green: weather is bad? Love how you have to go out to figure out what the weather is going to be like! Maybe Mexico can spare you one of their weather girls? Wouldn't that be a glam asset to your already sparkly (tree) Vienna?
Thank you filled in the other codes to make it clear, one means weather condition like snow, rain or hail, the other the temperature. When the lights raise it is good. That fine young lady would fade that sparkling tree away, but I would be worried that she could catch a cold :)
