Take Action: Tweet at the FDA Commissioner to ensure there's no animal feces on the food you bring home to your family. https://action.cspinet.org/page/16488/tweet/2?ea.tracking.id=Email&ea.url.id=1143693

As you know, the Center for Science in the Public Interest played a major role in pushing for passage of the Food Safety Modernization Act.

This landmark legislation—in part a response to outbreaks of Salmonella and E. coli linked to spinach, cantaloupe, cucumbers, and other foods—requires growers to prevent produce from becoming contaminated in the first place.

It’s unappetizing but true: Many outbreaks of foodborne illness are eventually traced back to contamination from animal feces in the water used to grow, harvest, or process fresh produce.

That’s why the Food Safety Modernization Act and its implementing regulations require growers to conduct microbial testing to ensure that there are not dangerous amounts of poop in the water used on farms.

Even though the law was signed in 2011—nearly seven long years ago—that requirement is still not being enforced.

And now the Trump administration’s Food and Drug Administration wants to avoid full enforcement until 2024—13 years after the law’s passage!

We need your help in letting the FDA know that you want no further delay in assuring that there is no animal feces on the food you bring home to your family. Will you please click here to Tweet the following message at FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb.

Delaying these safeguards will have a devastating impact. We estimate that the proposed delay will contribute to more than 730,000 cases of foodborne illness and many needless deaths.

Please take action today!
