This 122 year old Supercentenarian had a weird diet but lived healthy

Howdy Steemians?

How about a diet of chocolate, olive oil, cigarettes, and cheap red wine today and for the rest of the week, or perhaps the rest of the year? Or maybe even forever? Lolz….

Well, if you are wondering what I’m yapping about, well kindly take out a little bit of time to read through this post.

Living a good and healthy life is often based on so many factors, chief of which would be “food and diet”. Our dieticians and food experts always propose the consumption of certain food products, which are supposedly nutritious and healthy for the body, and which can help one live longer and all.

But then if you consider the fact that the oldest woman in the world who died in 1997, thrived on a diet of chocolate, olive oil, cigarettes, and cheap red wine, then you might begin to ask the question of “what the heck am I stressing myself and dieting my ass off, for?”

Meet Jeanne Calment

Jeanne Calment was the 122 year old woman who lived for so long, owing to a her heavy reliance on a weird diet of cigarettes, chocolate, olive oil, and cheap red wine.

Jeanne Calment, a French supercentenarian, enjoyed a life in which she spent time doing virtually everything the doctor warns you against doing if you desire to live a long and healthy life.

Calment drank, smoked, and played with (NOT TOYS) guns. She consumed excessive red meat, sugar and never had any desire fro breakfast except for just one or two cups of coffee.

How old did she live?

She lived from 1875 to 1997, to become 122 years old. As at when she called it quits and perhaps decided to give earth “the middle finger”, after enjoying life as she deemed fit, she was 122 years, five months, and 14 days old.

All through her years on earth, Jeanne Calment wasn’t exactly record worthy, until she had spent a century on earth. She began to break records after records after she had live for over a century, and her records were quite remarkable.

  • She became the oldest living person in France when she was 111 years old.
  • She became the oldest living person in the world at 113 years old
  • She became the oldest actress to ever appear on film, at 114 years old, after she made a brief act in Vicent and Me – a 1990 film.
  • She became the first person ever to live up to 116 years
  • When she turned 120, she became the oldest verified person to exceed the 120 years mark.
  • At 120 years, she released her first music single title “Mistress of Time”; a funk/rap track.
  • At 122 years old, she had earned the title and was crowned as the oldest person ever ‘liveth’.

When did she gain her fame?

Jeanne Calment first became famous when she turned 111 years old. At that age she broke the record for the oldest living person.

When interviewed with regards to her outstanding age, Jeanne Calment stated that even when she was over a 100 years, she had lived on her own until she turned 109, before moving to the nursing home in which she had lived one year earlier.

What was the secret to her long and adventurous life?

Well, Jeanne Calment categorically stated that her diet and active lifestyle was responsible for her youthful glow and long life. From her old age, around 85 years onward, she woke up at 6:45am daily, and began the day with prayer.

After that, she would carry out gymnastics while wearing headphones and sitting on her armchair. Her exercises included arm and leg exercises and finger flexing too.

She’d follow up her exercises with a shower, without help from any of her caregivers. After her shower she’d douse her body with olive oil.

She never had breakfast save for occasional cups of coffee. So, for lunch, she would eat beef – neglecting the healthier fish alternatives – and she’d smoke a cigarette and drink a glass of Port.

When she complained about her bland foods, she followed the complaints with requests for spicy and fried foods. She always finished up her meals with about two pounds of chocolate as desert, every week.

Calment often covered her meals in olive oil whenever she could; as she attributed her good state of health to an abundant use and consumption of olive oil, both in and out.

Observation of her mental faculty at old age was remarkable

While in a nursing home, from the age of 109 years, Jeanne Calment participated in several studies of supercentenarians. Doctors during that time noted that she had better mental capabilities, moved consistently faster and showed general healthiness than those who were about 10 to 20 years younger than her.

As at the time of her death, at the age of 122 years, Calment was 4 ft. 6 inches, and weighed 88 pounds. Despite her being almost completely blind, considering her old age, she remained in relatively good health.

Up until the year she died (1997), she was still consuming sweets and drinking red wine. She quit her smoking habit a year before she died, but remained adamant that her reliance on all of her above routine was what kept her alive and sound, for such a long time.

Inspirational. Post.. I can have port wine and chocolate.... 😂?.. Chocolates release endorphins... Happy hormones...

Lolz.....Port Wine and chocolate? Wow! That would be a helluva diet for you @geetasnani. I'm guessing you would like to break Jeanne Calment's record by living up to 123 years and above, yes?

"chocolate, olive oil, and cheap red wine " all good in moderation. I think caloric restriction is a big factor in longevity. What is a common characteristic in super-centenarians? They are not obese. You use the term excessive "She consumed excessive red meat, sugar ..." I'm not sure how true that was after all she died at 88lbs (4" 6"). Did your research ever mention if she was obese at any time in her life?
Interesting story.
Cheers!
Ian

Thanks for reading @rcebike. And to answer your questions....

What is a common characteristic in super-centenarians?

  • Researchers concluded that the lives of "these" people differed widely....and they had never been obese

She consumed excessive red meat, sugar...

  • She enjoyed daube (braised beef)
  • She did like creams (crèmes), cakes and in particular quatre-quarts (pound cake), and vanilla ice cream
  • She feasted on chocolate in her old age: sometimes over a kilogram (2.2 lb) of chocolate per week

I'm not sure how true that was after all she died at 88lbs (4" 6"). Did your research ever mention if she was obese at any time in her life?

  • During the last years her height was 4 ft 6 in [137 cm] and her weight was 88 pounds [40 kg]; she confirmed that she had always been small, but she had lost weight in recent years

perfect info :D :D i will try ;)

Yeah, I heard about this woman sometime ago and I was like wow. The excessive smoking didn't even give her lung cancer. Her life makes dietitians advice look rather vague.

Very true @nigtroy. Her life truly negates a lot of dietician gospel. However, eating healthy and keeping a healthy lifestyle is still the ultimate. Not everyone can be like the legendary Jeanne Calment. Thanks for reading buddy.

I know right?, If you try to imitate her lifestyle now who knows, you might probably end up dying some days later or end up with some serious health problems.

What a good read. Thank you for another extraordinary piece of an unusual story. You're a story hunter, that's for sure. I like how you find interesting things. The old lady impressed me in particular of her diet and this relaxed attitude.
I wish more people would have the same. Nowadays everyone is obsessed with health and youth.

Yea, you are right @erh.germany. It's funny how it is those things that should ordinarily harm her that she enjoyed doing with so much ease. And yet she lived longer than most people who were so particular about their dieting and keeping fit or healthy. Strange irony. Thanks for finding time to read as well.
