Superfood #1. Beetroot

in #health7 years ago

So a while back I noticed every 4-6weeks I took a crazy obsession with a new food and couldn’t get enough of it which inspired my ‘Superfood of Month’ posts on our gym notice board in the centre.

All of these foods all had one thing in common, amazing health benefits!!It’s only fair I share these with our online followers too…

BEETROOT

I’ve always loved beetroot growing up, we always ate a lot of salads and beetroot was always in there, the pickled kind in the jar sometimes but also fresh beets. After a recent conversation in the canteen on a break I popped into the veg shop on the way home and picked up a bunch of beets. (I love beetroot in her juices!)

So many reasons to eat the beet but eating it raw as with all vegetables is deffo the way to go, when we cook vegetables we damage their properties loosing nutrients along the way. Keeping it raw leaves it with a tastier texture anyway and perfect for salads.

Its powerful antioxidant properties prevent ‘bad’ ldl cholesterol oxidising which protects arteries, helps reduce risk of heart attack or stroke as a result of reducing blood pressure.

Along with this a great source of soluble fibre which has been shown to lower cholesterol. Always check with your GP if you suffer from specific health issues but may help those with higher blood pressure and cholesterol.

For me the high iron content is invaluable helping with anemia and fatigue.

Boost stamina which when teaching 3 classes a shift as well as constantly on the go is an added bonus for me.

For females the beetroot helps utilize calcium in the body helping protect against osteoporosis.

Great source of folic acid for normal tissue growth.

For those with a weight loss goal the beetroot stabilizes blood sugar levels which will help with cravings avoiding a dip in sugar levels and energy.
