I Just Want To Sleep...

in #health5 years ago (edited)

Are you consistently tired? Maybe you just like to sleep in, or maybe you don't want to wake up due to depression or other reasons. You might be severely endangering your health! Studies show that people who sleep too much are at a higher risk of heart problems!

A study published in the European Heart Journal found people who slept longer than eight hours had a higher risk of dying or developing diseases of the heart or blood vessels in the brain compared to those who slept for between six and eight hours.

The research examined data on 116,000 people aged between 35 and 70 from 21 different countries.

After an average follow-up period of nearly eight years, researchers recorded 4,381 deaths and 4,365 “major cardiovascular events”.

So don't sleep in, got it, I'll just sleep a few hours a day, but wait, that could affect my heart, too?!

Sleep is essential for a healthy heart. People who don't sleep enough are at higher risk for cardiovascular disease and coronary heart disease—regardless of age, weight, smoking and exercise habits. Getting enough good quality sleep is important if you want to lower your risk of these conditions.

It's not completely clear why less sleep is detrimental to heart health, but researchers understand that sleeping too little causes disruptions in underlying health conditions and biological processes like glucose metabolism, blood pressure, and inflammation. The same may be true for oversleeping.

Well that's crap, I can't stay up late and I can't sleep in. Why do we sleep so much anyway?! Wait, we used to sleep twice a day? Maybe that's why so many people wake up throughout the night!

Anthropologists have found evidence that during preindustrial Europe, bi-modal sleeping was considered the norm. Sleep onset was determined not by a set bedtime, but by whether there were things to do.

Historian A. Roger Ekirch's book At Day's Close: Night in Times Past describes how households at this time retired a couple of hours after dusk, woke a few hours later for one to two hours, and then had a second sleep until dawn.

During this waking period, people would relax, ponder their dreams, or have sex. Some would engage in activities like sewing, chopping wood, or reading, relying on the light of the moon or oil lamps.

Ekirch found references to the first and second sleep started to disappear during the late 17th century. This is thought to have started in the upper classes in Northern Europe and filtered down to the rest of Western society over the next 200 years.

Interestingly, the appearance of sleep maintenance insomnia in the literature in the late 19th century coincides with the period where accounts of split sleep start to disappear. Thus, modern society may place unnecessary pressure on individuals that they must obtain a night of continuous consolidated sleep every night, adding to the anxiety about sleep and perpetuating the problem.

So what's the norm? While sleeping too much or too little could lead to severe health problems, maybe people can find a balance of when to sleep? In today's world that's a bit difficult, but this might just explain why some people have trouble going back to sleep after a strange dream. Or why you're feeling ill during work. Finding that balance is crucial! How much do you sleep? Are you unknowingly killing yourself? Leave your thoughts below!

The older I get I notice I'm not made for staying up late. It takes a while for my body to transition if I need to for some purpose or another. I used to be a night owl back when I was younger, now I enjoy being a morning person. I wonder how it would be if the majority of people were bi-modal sleepers...

I find that if I oversleep I will get a stuffiness in my sinuses, accompanied with a headache.

When I over sleep, I usually want to go back to sleep but when I get my 6-7 hours of sleep I feel like I'm wide awake and I can get up in the morning. Loved the article by the way. I didn't know sleeping in could effect my heart. I thought sleep was a good thing. I guess it goes to show to much of something good can be bad for you.

I wish society would just give up putting pressure on people and allow what is natural to occur... just like with pleasure and sex, the same should be said about Sleep or anything else. Work should have some form of schedule at times IF there is certain things that need to be checked at certain points like say science experiments... but it is the Reptillian society that wants to maintain absolute control over everything and everyone which is not right at all. These things MUST change if we are ever to have a utopian society that does not rely on social prejudices like.... you need to drink 8 glasses of water a day (which we proved was a lie) and thinks like you need 8 hours of sleep which I also believe is a lie. So many lies permeate our society.... why cant people just RELAX and let the natural way take over. Yes CERTAIN things need to be controlled but not every single solitary thing...

Someone's razzled...lol at least there will be no need to sleep in the Kingdom.

There definitely needs to be a healthy balance

I guess I'm in a good place, always wanting more sleep but, never getting it. Lol!
