🎃👻Tamworth Saxon Castle🎃👻

in #halloween6 years ago (edited)

Had a great day out yesterday at Tamworth Castle.

The castle was set out to celebrate Halloween and it was well worth the reasonable entrance fee. Check out the website.

Although it was very spooky and got us in the mood for the 31st, the real purpose of my visit was its Saxon history.

Tamworth was the royal capital of the kingdom of Mercia in Saxon period. I am just finishing off writing a supernatural novel based on some of the Saxon kings and Queens and mention Tamworth castle a few times.

So the visit was not just pleasure, but also to help with my research.

How the land would have looked in Saxon times.

How castle looks today.

My family and I enjoyed our day out there and I would recommend it, especially if you have young kids looking for a spooky Halloween outing.

Looks very Elizabethan. It is local but we have never been. We normally do Bolsover Castle on Halloween. We are also English Heritage members so it’s free. At Steemfest this year so miss this and Bonfire Night.

Basically the mound has been built on since Saxon time. Think the castle as it stands now is Tudor. But there is a beautiful example of Norman herringbone masonry on the castle causeway.
I visited Bolsover a couple of years back, the ruins were beautiful, and also found the horse display fascinating.
