Public WiFi

There are simple ways to prevent data being shared via public WiFi. You need to check it’s legitimate because it's easy for hackers to set up a fake WiFi network. Before signing on to any WiFi, check if the network name is legitimate by asking an employee of the place you’re in.

Forget the network

Once you have finished browsing on a WiFi, make sure to log off all services you were using and then ask the device to forget the network.

Turn off your WiFi

Make sure you disable WiFi when it's not in use, that prevents your device joining any networks automatically without your approval.

Use a VPN

VPNs act as an intermediary between your device and the internet server, meaning a hacker will find it impossible to sniff your information, whether this is on a mobile, tablet or computer.

Passwords

It’s good practice to change all passwords regularly. How many of us do that? There are password managers available in the form of software, you can download them. The most popular password is 123456. There are also services that support two-factor authentication, you should be using that anyway, and actually I ask myself why this isn't incorporated in the steemit.com website.

Check the lock

If a website is secure it displays the green lock sign in the address line, also known as HTTPS. It encrypts the data between your device and the internet server, meaning hackers can’t decipher your information.

Apps

Always check permissions of apps before and during installing. Make sure they aren’t accessing unnecessary information.
