How to: Get a Metallica guitar sound in your DAW, for free.

in #guitar-trail8 years ago (edited)

Hi Steemit peoples.

This is a quick tutorial regarding an easy and free way to get up and running with some great old school metal sounds for free.

This tutorial takes into account that you have a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) and a low latency way to record guitars, usually with a dedicated audio interface. Also I assume you know how to use it, this is more regarding a specific group of plugins than an in depth instructional.

Recommended DAW is what ever came with your interface but if you didn't get one I suggest:
Reaper - excellent and inexpensive.
Cubase - fairly cheap, I prefer cubase solely because I am so used to editing midi on it.

I don't use any others and therefore wont recommend them - anything that uses the cloud gets a no from me automatically.

Anyway, the process is very simple.

You download: http://www.richardcookson.co.uk/Tattva/ The "gold impulse response collection"
Grab Emissary and NadIR: http://www.kvraudio.com/developer/ignite-amps

load them up, properly gain stage your guitar and you are good to go.

In more detail:
Load Emissary - Don't touch anything but change to the distortion channel.
Load NadIR: Point it to wherever you unzipped the gold impulse response library.

From there it's as simple as flicking through the IRs until you find one that suits, record two tracks panned left and right and you have a very passable Metallica sound with no mucking around.

The reason I posted this is I always wanted an old school metal sound for recording, I used to try lots of different things but none have come as close as easily as this current signal chain. Simple - is good.

This is a very quick demo, I purposefully left in the mistakes (lol) to make it clear it is my average to middling guitar playing. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1JXeDaw4BPCURS-TrHcpknptfgXlnguBp
