Women's History Month is an annual declared month that highlights the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society. It is celebrated during March in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia, corresponding with International Women's Day on March 8.

Making a difference in the Philippines

Janice Hung is one of these women who makes a difference in society.

Janice has been in the martial arts for many years. Janice is an International Martial Arts Champion, Nationally, 10x Gold Medalist, I am a Seagames Medalist. Janice is also a Commercial Model and Actress in the Philippines. In 2017 she began contemplating sharing the practical purposes of martial arts to more people including women, wanting to teach the basics of self defense.

My goal is to improve the quality and safety of our communities by providing practical and accessible self-defense training with martial arts values to the venerable sectors of society. According to a United Nations report in 2006, “women and girls continue to suffer discrimination and violence in every part of the world.” It breaks my heart when I read in the news that a woman or child was violated. I wanted to take action, and the Udefend Project was born.

Why we need Udefend

In a world full of violence and crime, anyone can be a victim, most especially women and children. In the Philippines, there is an alarming rate of violence against women and children. 4 out of 10 students are bullied and there are about a hundred reported cases of bullying every day. 1 out of 5 children suffers from sexual violence at home, in school or in the community. 1 child or woman is raped every 62 minutes and 70 percent of victims are children. No one should be a victim because we have the power to fight back by defending ourselves. Let us take a stand and help those women and children who feel powerless. Together, we can help empower more women and kids.
